A couple more for you. 1 March 1986. Panthers v Ayr. Pete Gingell's shots of the preliminary bout which a few seconds after these were taken became a bench-clearer. Looking again at the first picture, I'm a bit worried about Nigel Rhodes' right foot, which appears to be facing the wrong way. In the second picture, who is the Panther on the right who's just caught a good one, and who is the Ayr player who's delivered it? Also, what part did that Ayr player play in our club a few years later?

Hmmm.
At first glance I thought it was TK getting the good shot from the Bruin in the second picture, but if it was March 86 I must be wrong.
Think the guy standing up by the boards with the black tie at the far right of the first picture is my old man.

Still too early for me Stef.
The question I wanna ask is... did the guy jumping off the bench in the 2nd pic get on? And did the benches clear?
The 80s clothing is fantastic haha

Not sure who our player is thats just taken one, but is the Bruins player Kevin Murphy? Made a great coach for us, sorry when he was forced out!

I just noticed a couple of other things on the second picture.
First take a look at the guy on the left of the bench wearing the visor. He is looking straight at Damps who has that familiar arms crossed, unimpressed thing going on. Is the player waiting for the nod from Damps to enter the fray?
Second, notice that the Panthers bench straddles the red line (you can see the line painted on the boards behind the Ayr player.) This practice continued for quite a few more years before our bench mas moved further down the ice so that both benches were in the usual places. Obviously this was done to make line changes easier for us and more difficult for the oppo. If memory serves, it was Ayr who later instigated the moving of our bench to a more equitable location by threatening not to play if the bench wasn't moved.

Stef, it's thread of the season without a doubt!
In pic 1, Nigel obviously had no problem going toe-to-toe with a goalie (McCrone?), is the other Panther in shot Phil Adams? Gary Keyward (sitting by the exit) looks quite concerned!
In Pic 2, as said, James Elliott (Hunt) and Kev Murphy, not sure how Murph got into the position he's in, with gloves still on but stick nowhere in sight. On the bench, Dwayne is half on the ice already with Goldby and Hutchinson in their feet too. Next to Damps, is that Darryl Easson in the glasses, with Harry Todd and maybe Les Strongman just behind? Also note the fans at the right, standing right at the ice and leaning on the boards. I was sitting near the penalty bench, to the right on the front row and I remember having to duck a players stick that almost took my head off (or maybe it was the Murrayfield brawl from around the same time?)
Any more pics as the other players join in?

I remember how the brawl started, jim keyes gave Ayr goalie an ice wash and recieved a goalie paddle over the head for his trouble then jamie crapper came flying in to hammer some one. never saw crapper fight up to that time. Good fun days.

Stef, thread of the century. No doubt. Just great stuff, even if it is just before my time. Life was a bit different then. My only question, has anyone got any shots of the Odelein/Rowe fight? Does any video exist anywhere? Another who'd never really "got involved" prior to that and elevated himself to hero status in about 5 punches. And that epic 7-6 Steelers game.... I loved the old barn.

not many mobiles around in those days for filming on. Not even sure games were taped, may have been.

Chip cobs in cafe before the game, sweet shop, chatting to the players from both teams after the game, the atmosphere can never be repeated ( takes out hankie to blow nose ) . remember great conversations with Garth Premak and Kip Noble, great blokes. And travelling back from Fife with the team and Selmar bringing beer down to us on the coach.

Thanks Stef
fabulous pictures, fabulous era, the rink was always freezing with water soaking up through the matting and TK used to take a 2 minute penalty in order to get off the ice for a rest. The first picture was before my time but all of the others have brought back wonderful memories!

One memory which has been mentioned.... mini hot dog and chips! They were just the nicest! Mind you, that could also be the reason Im so unfit now, after training we had to go to the cafe and wait to be picked up whilst the traffic died down (we were on the ice 4-5pm iirc)

What about the old skate shop,.. to the left of the stairs in the foyer,.. bought my first skates there way back when,.. dusty little hole with skates and stuff in pigeon holes on the wall.
The tuck shop next to the cafe was legendary,.. I can still see it quite clearly in my minds eye.
"Quarter of midget gems and a quarter of chewing nuts please "

Think the guy standing up by the boards with the black tie at the far right of the first picture is my old man. That’s Charles Walker, who was one of the directors of the Stadium and a big reason Panthers returned in 1980 as he was the only director at the time sympathetic to bringing the sport back. Can you believe that Gary Keward had enquired before 1980 about resurrecting the Panthers but was told no-one in Nottingham wanted to watch hockey. Even when we first came back the figure skating fraternity held sway for a while. In our first season games faced off at 6pm, but we had to be off the ice by 8pm for general skating. This meant the third period was often played straight time until the last two minutes. I don’t know: all you posting on this forum about value for money. You've never had it so good as you’ve got it now, I say you've never had it so good etc etc (cont. page 94) Not sure who the Panther at the back is, but it might be Jamie Crapper, who got what I am sure was the only match penalty of his career after this incident. As has been said, it’s the late James Elliott (James Hunt at the time of this photo) taking the punch from Kevin Murphy, who later became our coach for half a season. Actually, I’ve just noticed the Panther furthest away from the camera appears to be wearing odd socks. take a look at the guy on the left of the bench wearing the visor. He is looking straight at Damps who has that familiar arms crossed, unimpressed thing going on. Is the player waiting for the nod from Damps to enter the fray? I reckon so. I didn't see what turned it into a bench clearer. It might have been Kevin Conway jumping out of the penalty box next to me and having a fight with Jimmy Keyes, during most of which he was pulling Keyes' hair, the big girl (sorry, that's a bit sexist, isn't it?), but Ayr's coach got a gross misconduct so I guess he sent his team on first. Referee Ken Bullock threw 13 players out of the game. Second, notice that the Panthers bench straddles the red line I can't remember when our bench was moved into the defensive zone but for the first season or two at least it was in the neutral zone whilst the opposition were stuck right down the bottom end. Certainly gave us an advantage and also, because the benches were so close together with nothing separating them, we had that great spectacle one play-off game when Tom Stewart from Dundee marched down to our bench and squared off with Alex because he objected to Alex's tactics. Great stuff. Unfortunately I’ve got no more photos of this famous night. I’m struck, and I hope folks looking at these pictures who didn’t go to the old place also are, by just how close the fans are to the players and the benches. Literally sitting on the row of seats behind. Amazing really.

Can you believe that Gary Keward had enquired before 1980 about resurrecting the Panthers but was told no-one in Nottingham wanted to watch hockey. Was it not said at the time we reformed that the only place that had staged hockey in the 50s that would accept it again was Brighton? I have no idea where Gary Keward is or what he does these days, but it would be interesting to find out if he ever imagined the Panthers would turn into what they are now (or even if we'd still be around nearly 30 years later) when he reformed the club.

Could the guy to the left of Damps, with over-sized specs possibly be a certain Radio Trent reporter??

Remember one older gentleman at a question night said that the opposition were using their door to the ice, why did not the Panthers. To which reply came.We have not got one.
Also I understand that when the game came back to us here in Nottingham. The rink threw two options. To take the risk and hire with profit or loss OR the cheaper option of rent the evening and the rink take the tb etc....I bet they wish they had taken the first offer after it took off so well.Whoosh.
