Gavin Fraser tries to get one past Ian Young in the Cleveland goal, but who is the other Panther in this picture?

13 April 1985. Panthers 6 Lee Valley Lions 7. At the end of February 1985, the Panthers' manager, chairman and treasurer resigned. In our remaining eight league games we scored 31 goals and conceded 84. In our last league game at home to Durham we were 12-0 down in the second period before fighting back for a 15-2 defeat. This season was a real low point. Still. At least we could get a first division team in for the Walker Cup final, and have a look at a potential new goalie for the following season (John Tague). Unfortunately he let in three goals in the first five minutes, the last one shorthanded, and got yanked. We got it back to a 6-4 lead with seven minutes to go, and managed to lose 7-6. Lee Valley were a new club and were unusual in having Finnish imports, including a goalie, Vesa Pennanen. Like his import predecessor Ron Katernyuk, he stood out, ably supported by Janne Lehti in defence and Ari Arvila up front. They had a guy called Bergin (Mark) who had two fights (a relative perhaps?) and a forward called Mark Stancampiano - there's a good one to shout out when he's scored. Anyway, some action from the game. The excellent Pennanen with a pad save.

Pennanen again, this time juggling a save from Jim Gauthier as Arvila wheels away in the background. Note also the Lions fans in numbers in the stands on what was a big occasion for them.

Gavin Fraser tries to get one past Ian Young in the Cleveland goal, but who is the other Panther in this picture? Ah, Ian Young. Say what you like about him as a keeper, but his wife was 110% value for money. Mad as a hatter, and constantly shouting abuse at the opposition from the stands.

Got the job at Panthers after writing to the club, explaining why he wanted to play in Nottingham and alll but begging to be signed.
Oh how times change.

I remember the Lea Valley game as being the only game in nearly 30 years of watching the Panthers, that I have actually willed the opposition to score. The reason being that amongst the travelling support was a rather attractive young lady with huge fondleable breasts, who would jump up and down very enthusiastically each time Lea Valley scored.....happy days....fondle memories

Great to see one of the goals from the Whitley game where we scored the winner with a second to go. Gauthier I believe, who as I remember also scored a winner with five seconds to go the same season. Seem to remember that Whitley had a very lanky import (Alcorn?) who could step over the boards onto the bench rather than clambering over them.

As I scrolled down the page I thought the photo was going to illustrate the young lady in question in the post above it.
How disappointing.

Unfortunately, I didn't notice said lady (or I was too young to appreciate such things?), which is a shame as I would have had a good view from our seats in Block 2.

On the basis that these photos are ones that appeared in the Panthers programme whilst I was editor I am afraid I don't have many of the crowd and none of bosoms. It is a family sport, after all. I do remember on my one and only trip to Cardiff seeing a well-endowed lady who prompted the observation from another of our group that, ".....you could lose John Lawless in there", which became the benchmark by which subsequent cleavages were judged.

Anyway, back to the pics. 14 September 1985. Panthers 9 Crowtree Chiefs 3. After the disaster that was 2004/05, this pre-season challenge was the first game under our new coach Alex Dampier. There were also a number of debutants, and here's one of them. The Legend That Is Jim Keyes in his shiny new helmet doing what we came to enjoy - making a nuisance of himself by our opponents' goal.

And here's another debutant, Jamie Crapper, clearly upset that this one didn't go in despite the efforts of John Hobson.

21 September 2005. Panthers 8 Solihull Barons 4. We had quite a big rivalry with Solihull at this time and this was a welcome win, especially as we were 2-1 down at the end of the first. Keyes and Crapper were starting to click by now (they got 6+3 between them in this game), and here we see Craps rounding Dave Graham in the Barons' goal to score.

Keyes doing his usual irritant job in where it hurts. Point of interest here is the wrongly spelt name on his shirt. We all got it wrong to start with.

28 September 2005. Panthers 19 Southampton Vikings 1. One of those laughers that the Autumn Cup used to throw up, against the team that the previous February had got their first win of the 2004/05 season against us, prompting the mass resignations by the management that laid the basis of our 'new start' this season. Ged Smith can't get it by overworked Vikings goalie Tom Hickman.

A rare photo of the late Russ Timmins in action, supported behind the goal by a very young looking Randall Weber.

Never really got going here and wound up in Peterborough the following season. 5 October 1985. Panthers 10 Peterborough Pirates 5. And here is Mr Wright unable to prevent a Panthers goal. Pirates were an up and coming club at this time under the leadership of the diminutive but pretty darned good John Lawless. This was a hard fought win, despite the score. A great example of the all-action Keyes as he scored 2+3 in between sitting six penalties.

Keyes tries one of his trademark wraparounds. The goalie here is ex-Streatham-and-beloved-of-Panthers-fans Gary Brine. I remember this game because, as scorer, these were the days when you had to go to the dressing rooms after the game for the captains' signatures. When I went to the Peterborough dressing room, a hand emerged, grabbed the sheet and slammed the door shut. Ten minutes later the door opened and the sheet reappeared with an essay on the back from Mr Brine complaining about the goal judges only giving him 31 shots for the 10 goals he let in. He got fined for that. Happy days.

28 September 2005. Panthers 19 Southampton Vikings 1. Wow! The Vikings at the NIC in a twenty goal thriller and I must have slept through it! ;D Well before my time Stef but I'm thinking that would be the 1985/6 season? I checked on Pete's site for confirmation but I think the opposition/result he gives for the 28th seem to be in error. Is that Gavin Fraser lurking behind the goalie? Love the photos Stef - they really bring the history of the club alive and it's great to see them on the internet. Time you built a website - never mind the decorating and gardening! ;D

Sorry for the hiatus but I am in the middle of a course assignment that is taking up a lot of time. There are more pics to come when I (eventually) finish the damned thing.

Layton Eratt helps John Hobson celebrate one of his two goals in the game. The days when we couldn't beat Streatham for toffee were a distant memory now as the London club were in a decline that would eventually see them drop out of hockey at the top level, something that seemed unthinkable in the early 1980s. In this game, Redskins were 2-1 up after 25 minutes but then collapsed as we scored 13 goals in 34 minutes. Keyes 5 goals/Crapper 6 assists showed how quickly these two players had gelled in what was a key partnership for us.
