The Steelers, after suffering double defeat last weekend, are obviously getting desperate for a change of fortune - they've announced a 'Let's Get Closer to the Steelers' competition, that will see one 'lucky' fan standing next to Dave Matsos on the Steeler's bench for their game with Belfast - probably coaching! ;D ;D ;D www.sheffieldsteelers.co.uk/news/?id=4946Want to enter? Only £19.95 for Steeler's ST Holders, or £29.95 for non-ST holders - what a bargain!! Well, somebody's got to pay for all these free seats they keep giving away!

£20? Jesus, what a rip-off, i can't see many going for it. If it were 1 or 2 quid then maybe but who's going to lay down 20 for nothing?

This thread has taken the whole thing more out of context than an article in The Stir! It's not £20 for a chance to win a place on the bench. It's £20 (or £30 for non season ticket holders) to go to a meet-the-players kind of event before the game. Someone at this event will be lucky enough to win a spot stood next to the coach for the game. What's the big deal folks?

Why does it cost non-ST holders more?
I am a ST holder in Nottingham. I'd be alarmed that just because you don't buy a ST your penalised.

Like i said on steeltalk, a bit of a brave thing to do . I didn t think fans were allowed to watch the game from the bench as theres a higher risk of possible injury etc.

The difference is only because the non ST holder gets his £10 entry ticket as well.. They all get food and drinks included.

Why does it cost non-ST holders more? I am a ST holder in Nottingham. I'd be alarmed that just because you don't buy a ST your penalised. The £19.99 is for a pie and pea's and a drink in the what Dave simms calls the Tent before the game and after the game , the season ticket holders price is because they allready paid to enter the game , the none season ticket price is for Entry to see the game = £10 then the £19.99 for the pie and pea player meet in the Tent . In this Tent the coach will answer questions along with a few players on such things as that nights oposing team and his tactic to outplay them ( SOME HOPE ;D ) then after the game the coach will give his explanation of why they won or lost the game . At £19,99 it must be the most expensive PIE and PEA supper in the country so to make it more Gullable they are offering a raffle with youre ticket to win a spot on the Bench next to the coach . Is the fan fully insured to do this ?

I always thought you werent allowed any non coaches on the bench, you can be stood outside the bench area but I would have thought insurance and such like wouldnt allow it.
Of course im sure its all been fully researched by the steelers

£20 for the full VIP package, yes please!! Reception before the game Pie and pea supper with entertainment Game from box, bar or stands Post game reception with players and staff. Sounds like a good deal to me and unsurprisingly it is massively over subscribed EVERY time they do it. This week there is an added incentive having got clearance from the powers that be to have one lucky person on the bench. Another good idea from Steelers. I was near people from a local football club last weekend and they couldnt believe how 'inclusive' this spoprt can be, we can get access football fans can only dream about. But please don't let that get in the way of the usual cringworthingly bitter snipes on here eh? As I have said many times before, when there is only you left as the rest of us 'less stable' types have gone, don't come back and moan that you have no league of note to play in will you.

So if it is Massivley Oversubscribed , Why is it Massivley Advertised for ( MUGS ) PUNTERS ? at the end of the Day you are paying £20 for pie and peas and a drink and the chance to rub shoulders with the players , At Nottingham pay a couple of Quid for a Drink and buy a bag of pea nuts in the NIC bar and rub shoulders with the players , total price £3.50p . I can buy Pie and Peas on the way home and crack open a bottle of Wine for less than £8 and then get some after match amusment reading the stealers forum with advertisments for £19.99 for the VIP entertainment package , and as the next weekend arrives a Reminder from Mr simms that there are still places for the Pie and pea after match VIP Tent , Oversubscribed ? yer havin a Laugh ;D I still think that there will be an issue should one of the winners of the stand on the bench with the team gets INJURED . With sheffields reluctance to pay out for a Player career ending injury then what chance has a Fan of getting compensation for say a Blindness injury sustained with a puck to the head ? I find the steelers ideas of extra fund raising Too amusing sometimes , A Jacuzzi ? , PIE and Peas Supper ? , What next a floating Zepellin with a lottery VIP winning fan strapped underneath for that PERFECT view of the Game ;D or meet Dan Tessier in the Penalty box , and have a Game of chess

I didnt think the Steelers coach stood on the bench at the moment anyway.
Isnt he swanning about somewhere in Canada waiting for his flight back just after Christmas?

Some people need to get out more. So Steelers are doing something to raise money for thier club, it may be a bit different but it's still just a way of raising much needed money. No one is forcing people to do it either, those that think it is a waste of time and a rip off don't have to go for it. And those that like the idea can do.
At the end of the day, does it matter?

Gordon Bennett!! I post a light-hearted message, putting a slightly obscure, tongue-in-cheek spin on a Steelers Press Release, and spark a discussion on Health & Safety; discrimination against non-Season Ticket holders in the Tin Shed, and told that I ought to get out more! I actually agree with the last point, but I think my wife may have something to say about it! ;D LIGHTEN UP GUYS - LIFE'S TOO SHORT!!

lets be honest here the panthers arent backwards when it comes to taking the fans to the cleaners, i mean look how many shirt auctions we have had in just the past 18 months and yet each and every one still sells well so who cares how the money is raised as long as it keeps clubs solvent eh? I mean even cemans and sebbys shirt sold it just shows theres always one out there....

I believe the last time the Steelers did this they got 200 people in attendance. By my reckoning that's £4,000 less the cost of the drink and food supplied....not a bad nights work by the club. The hot tub also seems to be proving very popular.....especially for those watching in the stands....the bikini clad ladies are providing far more entertainment than the players at the moment Regards Doom

No one is forcing people to do it either, those that think it is a waste of time and a rip off don't have to go for it. And those that like the idea can do. At the end of the day, does it matter? Well said. Sounds like a perfectly good idea to me (the insurance/legality issue of having a fan on the bench is something to watch, but that's all...) - credit to them for having a good idea and using it (certainly more sensible IMHO than the 'hot tub' idea... which just makes me cringe). Sounds like a good deal to me and unsurprisingly it is massively over subscribed EVERY time they do it. This week there is an added incentive having got clearance from the powers that be to have one lucky person on the bench. Another good idea from Steelers. As I have said many times before, when there is only you left as the rest of us 'less stable' types have gone, don't come back and moan that you have no league of note to play in will you. I was in full agreement with you there, Nemesis - until that last paragraph. The ridiculousness of the concept of a fan of the Steelers getting on his high horse about sniping is exceeded only by the incredible idea that anyone from Sheffield has the moral authority to criticise anyone else for a "don't come back and moan... when there is only you left" attitude. Something that has been virtually a trademark of the teal-and-orange brigade for as long as I've been a fan. I'm amazed that anyone from up the M1 even has the gall to come out with a comment like that. Nemesis - you may be surprised to know that I often agree with what you say, or at least have some sympathy for what you say.... but in this case, I seriously cannot believe that you really think that, I really don't.

Some people need to get out more. ;D - I did, have a night away and look what happens in my absence! Not in my book - seems like a clever promotion by the Steelers organisation and no one is forced to attend after all. Doom hits the nail on the head (as ever!) in pointing out it's a pretty shrewd piece of business. We should recognise that as Panthers are no slouches when it comes to raising money from the fans either!

We should recognise that as Panthers are no slouches when it comes to raising money from the fans either! Yes Panther do the shirt thing to raise extra cash , But at least the punter has an item of value for their money and it is done through a proper bidding auction , the steelers in this promotion are only selling Pie and Peas plus a drink , the catch they are useing is VIP Experience for which they are paying around £15 for if the pie and peas plus drink is worth around a fiver . Meeting players and the coach can be done for Free and it should be the duty of any sports team to allow fans access for signing and chatting etc , I would cringe and shout out aloud to Gary Moran or Niel Black if the panthers got up to such a rip off idea . I also disagree with parents paying the panthers for the Young kids to become Mascot , this is also exploiting a situation and puts pressure on parents if their kids wish to do this . Raise money yes by all means , but do it honestly . and give value for money . A hot tub experience and a pie and pea + drink for that kind of money is just exploiting a situation of fans desire to meet players .

Get off the damn fence and show an opinion for once man! As for the mystical lottery, i got the wrong end of the stick because the filter doesn't allow me onto the Steelers site. Figure that one out... Still, 20 quid to have a chance to meet the players is still a little steep but if some people pay it then so be it. It'll probably work out to about 4 grand so fair play to them.
