It is with great regret that I must announce to the board this morning that Big Dave Steelers dad Owen has passed away. Coupled with the tragic news about Dave Page this is becoming a memorable week in UK ice hockey for all the wrong reasons.
My deepest and heartfelt sympathy to Dave and his family.
Owen was a fantastic guy who will be missed by all who knew him and many more besides given the unselfish work he carried out on behalf of the Steelers supporters club.
RIP Owen Grant.

RIP Owen. What a terrible couple of days

Owen was a top, top bloke.
I had some great times with his guy over some beers. A man who never had a bad word to say about Panthers fans.
Im devestated by the news.

This is a hammer blow....
Owen was a wonderful man - passionate about hockey and the Steelers. A warmer, more generous, fair minded man it's hard to imagine.
I've enjoyed many an hour in his company before or after games - hard to believe I wont be doing so again.
Heartfelt sympathy to Dave and the rest of his family.
I hope Panthers pay tribute to Owen as well as Dave Page on Saturday night - it would be fitting I think.
R.I.P. Owen

I did not know Owen but again like Dave Page , maybe not known long in our circles but for a brief period in our lives, someone once gone who leaves a void.
As you get older the persons we grew up with ,or knew, die and we feel as if we are with less friends around us.THEN we meet new people (us in Nottm with DP) and get new friends to be part of our lives , although a very small part of it. But to then have that taken away from us too just shows how important life is to be enjoyed.
I hope I put that right.Just what I am feeling at the moment.

I want 2009 over with, for me and my family it has been an ABSOLUTELY AWFUL year!!!!!!
Why is it the good people that are taken from us and bad people in this world are provided for and get away with murder (sometimes literally)!
R.I.P Owen.
Sympathies to BDS, the family and the Steelers fans for the loss of someone they cared for a great deal.

I am both stunned, & deeply saddened once again. I had the honour of meeting & talking to Owen a couple of times...what a gentleman he was. My sympathies, thoughts & prayers are being stretched here - but they will include Owen's nearest & dearest.

My thoughts go out to his friends and families.
Whilst having never met Owen, a loss of any kind in the hockey community is shared amongst the friendliest set of fans in sport.

Owen was a top bloke that had time for anyone. I will openly admit that I cried when I heard the news this morning after being told last night he was recovering after an operation.
I had a lot of time for Owen, and I can only offer my deepest sympathies to his son, Dave and his wife, Sharon.

In trying to reply to this thread, I am struggling to see the screen as there are tears rolling down my face. I have never been prouder to call Owen Grant 'Dad' after reading some of the messages here, Steel-Talk, KOTG and the cage, from people who had a lot of time for him. He's left some bloody big shoes to fill, and I just hope I can do justice to them For anybody within the region, I will post the funeral arrangements for anyone who wishes to attend, once organised. Thank you so much for all your kind words - it really is comforting to know so many people thought about him so well. Regards David Grant

Have a feeling that the game on Saturday will stick in everyones memory for all the wrong reasons - never met Owen but he sounds like a guy I would have wanted as a mate - an epic Steelers/ Panthers game would be a fantactic epitaph for Owen and Dave Page - R.I.P. guys

I know it's a pretty strong rivalry at times but on saturday the arena will be full of ice hockey fans, showing respect for two men known and liked by many. Times like this that make you realise just how special our sport is that so many fans are friends whoever they support.

A dear departed friend of mines epitaph reads:
Do not stand at my grave and weep I am not there. I do not sleep. I am a thousand winds that blow. I am the diamond glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush Of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there, I did not die.
It is well known and one of the most commonly used elegys around but it has brought me much comfort at times of loss.

Mountain Panther and Heanor Lair hit the nail on the head, such a devastating day, such a great man to know, so very hard to believe, especially after only seeing him on Sunday in Coventry. Those who knew him have lost someone very special today, those who didn't know him missed out on knowing a truely great guy. Myself and my other half will remember the Owen who was the life and soul of our parties throughout the years, the man who would always be there and who would help through thick and thin. We are really going to miss seeing him at the Arena and on the road, the Castle & NIC this Saturday will be strange place without him being around, although I'm sure he'll be there in spirit. RIP Owen Your Friends, Glynn & Susan
