How fast is clarke this year
his speed is incrediable at the minute
McAslan was unlucky not to scorer early in the game
strugling with injuries at the minute again though which is unfortunate Meyers, Moran, Stevens and Cooke
But i enjoyed the game tonight
good atmosphere i thought as well for the most part, good attendence as well

Pete - we are all getting old :-) Its not just you:-) The start of the 3rd was a bit broken and disjointed but they are playing out of position, in unfamiliar roles , never thought I would Shmyr on past performance leading the line, and are short of bodies. Thought McAslan needed someone to play with as the lines got mixed up - its obvious they miss Emersic on the forward lines to create opportunities with his speed and in the corners but we are top of the league and its many years since that happened. Am somewhat hopeful we need the bodies back soon though otherwise we are going to incur more injuries.

I quite enjoyed that. Must say my favourite bit was when Simoes, after receiving a penalty for whacking the linesman into the boards, told Hicks he was going to get his barbies out and play ping pong. Then he used his white towel to surrender!

P.S. IH-Update has let me down badly tonight. I gave up trying to keep track of the stats as I was trying to concentrate on the face-offs, only to find when I get home that the game wasn't covered. Looks like I'll have to wait for the Cardiff programme. Pete, I would just like to let you know something about Ih-update tonight. I was called at 18:45 b y the person who normally does this now at the arena to ask if I could cover which I agreed to do. The first period was fine up to the last 3.5 mins (I think) when the whole system went down for us. I couldn't add anything, make any changes, I couldn't even view the other teams as it showed me a 404 error (via wap). I asked other people in the vacinity where I sit and no-one else could get on. I also checked with the normal person who does it and they couldn't either. So, like may others who do the programme, I reverted to good old fashined pen and paper to record the stats for the whole match - living in the hope that it would return - but as you can see, it didn't. Whilst in the bar last night it came back up so I spend nigh on 20mins adding all the details on. When I went into the full site to see if it was correct, I was hugely dissapointed to see that the game had been removed due to no coverage available....... I do have all the stats on paper here so please do PM me if you sould like me to send these to you. Just a note though, in a world of such technology, things don;t always going to plan - in case anyone saw me, I was the one propping up the bar in T&D tapping into my mobile for what felt like ages!!

The whole Ih-Update site went down half way through the 1st period. Couldn't get anything for any games on wap or on computer. The home page wouldn't even work for most of it.

Lynds, I was supposed to be covering the game in Basingstoke last night but had similar problems, compounded by the very poor signal strength in the Silverdome. These things happen sometimes.

Penalty shots... has to be taken by someone one the ice doesnt it? Im glad schmyr didnt take it. hes not impressed me so far, tough yes, always up for it yes and that his role... hes doing it well... but hes a slow.
Lindsay, I did say intially when i was slagging him off I hope he comes good and Ill happily eat my words... and I am doing. I think hes the right sort of goalie for our D, looks to direct a rebound to his d rather than cover immediately and he pulled off some cracking saves. Convidence in him has much improved.
Wolfe! What a big guy, very athletic with it as well! Really kept them in the game. Manchesters PK is brilliant but our PP has all the passes, we arent coughing it up over the blue line but still not enough shots.... but when we do get one it does seem a close one!
And yes.... a steward came over and asked Me Keefe and Warren to keep the noise down a bit. BUT in all credit Simon Moore did come and have a word and explained she was new or something. Atmosphere and attendance was great I though. Manchester bought down more than I imagined they would as well.

gutted with the result but very pleased with the performance. not happy with the basiuk penalty that led to the goal but i expect a fair few of you to disagree with me. even if you thought it was a penalty i still don't see how it was given as tripping i couldn't see much of the winning goal from block 3 but apparently the lads were complaining about a hit on wolfe from shymr before the puck went in, hence tony got his misconduct shame the announcer called us the storm but the welcome was lovely so THANK YOU! we've been down to the NIC a few times in the last couple of years but what a difference it makes when it's supporting your own team ;D nice to see our GM is still writing in your programme too

I found it most amusing when people were shouting shoot on the PP, even though no one was screening Wolfe. Thought Ree's was outstanding on D, liking Evan Lindsay alot in net! his dapper DC seems to the player he was two years ago which is always a benifit and seems the ideal Captin also who was that birk in block 10 that was shouting "OI TONY HAND DROP DEAD"? tell you i wanna sort him out

A hard won and deserved two points last night. Not a lot of quality from either side in my opinion, but a hell of a lot of effort and it made for an entertaining game. Like Mark, I think last year's team would have lost that match - they'd have given up trying to get past Manchester's defence and hot netminder and ended up giving up one or two soft ones at the other end. The boys kept on grafting to the end and got their reward. The forechecking to keep the play in the Phoenix end for two shifts after we scored our second goal was great to watch, and stopped them building up any momentum to try and take it to OT.
Wolfe put in an awesome performance, while Lindsay looked much more sound as well (helped by a more responsible performance from his defence).
One question that's still troubling me though - did Tony Hand get his misconduct for arguing about the validity of our winning goal or complaining the ref didn't give him the assist on it?

I KNOW! haha It REALLY annoys me when people are just screaming at the players to shoot and get really frustrated. They have to pass it round to work an opening when they have a decent shot available and someone is screening the netminder. Completely pointless otherwise

Completely pointless otherwise True enough, but our powerplay was awful last night Matt. We need to work hard on this so we can capitalise on the higher number of opportunities that will come our way under ZT.

I was really impressed with the Panthers last night as much as I hate to admit it. I thought you played with alot of skill and toughness and unlike in previous seasons you seem to be able to play tough without gooning it up. I really like the look of Simoes and he was the MOM for me. I'd have liked to have seen a few more shots on Lindsay to see exactly how good he is but to the defences credit they made the shots fairly easy for him to save. The big test is gonna come when up against the Giants, Coventry and hopefully the Steelers (yes I know we're bottom ) but if you can win these games then its looking good for you guys. To finish with I though that Wolfe put in one of the best netminding performances I've ever seen. The guy doesn't seem to know what a rebound is. I'm hoping we can get him to Sheffield to train Lehman for a few days.

Teddy c, what game was you watching? Shmyer not impressing you, he worked his butt off held up the puck and used it superb, as for not being fast, with his bulk he wont be as fast as yhe quick boys, lets give him some credit. As an aside, one of our so called quick players has done nothing to impress me, Stevens, but I'm willing to see if he improves. They all have a part to play.

Can I take this opportunity to ask Stef who the Manchester Sphinx are? Chortle chortle. Oooh don't There was a point last night when we were surrounded by players serving some of the 527 penalties that got called when I inadvertantly referred to Manchester as the Storm. Then blow me the next time I nearly did it again but stopped myself. This meant it came out as "S-Phoenix" which sounded a bit like Sphinx. Sorry Manchester. It's a bit stressful down on the bench at the moment while all this ZT thing settles down.

Penalty shots... has to be taken by someone one the ice doesnt it? I've had a look in my rule book and it says, "The Coach or the Captain of the non-offending team selects and reports to the Referee the number of any non-penalized player who shall take the shot." (509(a)) So I guess that means any player not in the penalty box, even if he wasn't on the ice when the shot was awarded.

A few random thoughts from the match...
- Captain Clarkie! We always knew he was fast when on top form.... but he won not one but TWO foot-races in the first period... and both times, the Manchester players started ahead of him! Forget last season, the real Clarkie is back - and that's 5 goals in 3 games... that's ma boy! ;D
- that Jason Wolfe. Amazing... and a lot faster than I'd have expected for a netminder that big. Manchester have got a real star there. To give the Manchester MoM to anyone else would have been criminal. Just one slight downside - knocking the net off its moorings four times in the first period? He's lucky he didn't get a DoG penalty...
- teamwork. As someone else said before... Manchester put up one hell of a defence, and last year's team would probably have given up or done something stupid. Not this lot... this is good.
- Hicks. I'm going to go against the flow (well, mostly from the Phoenix fans that I've read) and say that I don't think he had THAT bad a game. I don't rate Hicks at all, never have... IMHO he called some wrong 'uns both ways and missed some both ways he should have called... par for the course in British ice hockey, yes? But overall, I disagree with some that it wrecked the game. It's early days for ZT all round, officials included - and he was certainly no worse than last season... but the ZT is opening things up for the speed/skill players. Overall improvement, sayeth I.
- Moran, Meyers, and now Stevens and Cooke. We're three games into the season, and we've got 4 players injured already! What the hell is going on?
- Tony Hand. Is it me, or are his legs going? He was slower than last season, and that did actually seem to be causing problems. Having him on the same line as that speedy #15 Molin (Phoenix have another star there) - didn't seem to work.
- Steve Simoes - checking monster! Special offer, that night only... check one player, get a linesman free! ;D I'm really liking this guy.
- Petricko's penalty shot. Oh dear... although getting one past that big Wolfeman can't be easy! Still - give MP his due... he was trying his nuts off afterwards to score. He'll get there, I'm sure...
- wasn't it great to have Manchester back? Credit to the Panthers for a public 'welcome back' to them & their fans.

Shaggy, i have to say, i think of all the refs, hicks has adjusted to the ZT the better. Hurts to say it because he was so awful last season, but having seen him ref the belfast game and the manchester game, i really cant fault him. Better than that bloody cloutman last night in romford, so glad he doesnt do elite league anymore

Oh, and how could I forget?
"Da da da-da... EVAN LINDSAY!" ;D
That was a cracking performance he put on against the Phoenix - and the chant of the Pandas said it all! No fault on him for that goal, I think... he got the first shot, and the rebound just got him - can't see many other goalies doing any better.
He's got a different style to other netminders that we've been used to, so it's going to take us a while to get used to him I think... but I would hope that his showing on Saturday night may have eased a few minds...
