Tonight's Results: Solway Sharks 1 Telford Tigers 3, Blackburn Hawks 7 Billingham Stars 6 (OT win)
The Nottingham Lions again rather thin on the ground with just enough for two lines and a couple of spares faced the present top club. A number of senior players failed to travel for this one but the guys put up a good battle losing out with a 5-0 result to the Steeldogs. Period scores:1-0/3-0/1-0. Miles Finney backstopped the game ending with a 93.67% save rate. Teenager Luca Sheldon was back up netminder tonight but was not used. A superb result given the opposition. Back to Sheffield tomorrow to face the Sutton Sting.

Tonight's Results: Hull Pirates 13 Blackburn Hawks 0, Billingham Stars 3 Whitley Warriors 5, Telford Tigers 8 Sheffield Steeldogs 4. The 'Dogs' suffer their first taste of defeat this season.
Sutton Sting 8 Nottingham Lions 1 The Lions No 1 netminder was late getting to the game and young Luca Sheldon started the game against a very fresh Sting attack and within ten mins they had netted 5 times. Miles Finney, having arrived took over and saw out the 50 mins of the game left and conceded two goals in the second period and just the one in the third. The Lions managed 22 shots on the Sting goalie scoring their only goal after 22 mins. Period Scores: 5-0/2-1/1-0. Scorer Ruskin Hughes with Cameron Pywell with the assist. Certainly in the second and third periods the Lions were in the game but the earlier part of the game gave them too much of a hill to climb. The positive thing is that the young guys such as Luca are being provided with opportunities youngsters at other clubs within the conference would dearly love to have. Some excellent comments following the Lions v Steeldogs game from the 'Dogs' camp as they were impressed with the commitment shown by the Nottingham team. They were amazed at the Lions never say die attitude throughout the whole game and their lack of fear when faced by teams of the 'Dogs' quality. This team may not be getting in the points but are proving points in other ways and that has to be positive.

Weekend Games: Saturday; Solihull Barons v Telford Tigers, Sheffield Steeldogs v Whitley Warriors, and Blackburn Hawks v Hull Pirates. Some interesting games on offer as Solihull try to put a stop to the Tigers winning streak and the Steeldogs attempting to put behind them their first loss of the season. The Hawks will be wanting to put together a better showing against the Pirates having suffered a humiliating 13-0 drubbing at Hull last Sunday.
Sunday: Whitley Warriors v Billingham Stars, Hull Pirates v Sheffield Steeldogs, Sutton Sting v Blackburn Hawks, Telford Tigers v Solihull Barons.
The Nottingham Lions are at home against fourth placed Solway Sharks with the earlier face off of 5.30pm. The Lions although having struggled points wise have remained totally committed to development by introducing a good many youngsters from the Nottingham Juniors. This has, of course, pitted the kids against the settled more experienced teams in the conference and this has invariably led to a plethora of uphill battles. The Nottingham Lions team has not had the luxury of settled lines as the young guys have commitments to the teams within their age group at junior level therefore the senior Lions team can and does change week to week. The one thing that is guaranteed from this ever changing Lions team is 100% and no more can possibly asked whatever the end score.

Tonight's Results: Solihull Barons 2 Telford Tigers 8, Blackburn Hawks 0 Hull Pirates 7, Sheffield Steeldogs 8 Whitley Warriors 1.
Hull Pirates take down the Blackburn Hawks for the second successive game and having scored 20 goals without a reply from the Hawks. Sheffield Steeldogs back to winning ways tonight but take to the road to face a rampant Hull Pirates on Sunday. The Telford Tigers, Hull Pirates, and the Sheffield Steeldogs are now beginning to open up a gap between these top three and the fourth placed Solway Sharks.

Nottingham Lions 0 Solway Sharks 7. No points for the Lions as yet but they are still giving it the best that they can whilst knowing that all the guys can do is give 100% and if that is all they can give then no more can be asked of them as a team. Period Scores: 0-2/0-3/0-2. Netminding duties were shared with Miles Finney between the pipes for 42 mins and young Massimo Agostini saw out the game with 18 mins.

Managed to catch up with Matt Bradbury after the Solway Sharks game and he was eager to praise his team that was missing so many senior players including his imports and both his leading scorers. With just ten forwards and five defence his team played with a plan to frustrate the opposition and to keep the score at a reasonable level. Realistically there was little hope of the win against the Sharks and with the strike force drastically reduced the team did the best they could and Matt was pleased with the way they set about their task defensively. Martin Grubb Head Coach of the Sharks and a close friend, from their junior days, of the Lions Head Coach did go to the Lions dressing room after the game to offer encouragement to the team particularly the youngsters. He was impressed with their ability to stick to the task and to learn from the invaluable experience not afforded to many young players in the Moralee Conference.

Weekend Games: Saturday: Hull Pirates v Billingham Stars, Sheffield Steeldogs v Telford Tigers. The Tigers moved to top of the table last weekend now with one game in hand over the Steeldogs and a one point lead.
Sunday: Whitley Warriors v Blackburn Hawks, Solihull Barons v Sheffield Steeldogs, Telford Tigers v Hull Pirates. The Tigers v Pirates looks to be an absolute blinder of a game particularly if the Tigers fall to the 'Dogs' on Saturday.
The Nottingham Lions travel up to the north east to meet the Billingham Stars. The Stars have had a tough old time having acquired 6 of their just 9 points this season from the Lions and will be looking to add to that tally on home ice. The Stars have struggled as much as the Lions but have sufficient experience and bench strength to grab a few points here and there a luxury that has not been available to the Lions. Not sure how many players Matt Bradbury will have available for this road game but whatever team he puts out they will give it their all, and that is assured.

Tonight's results: Hull Pirates 11 Billingham Stars 2, Sheffield Steeldogs 5 Telford Tigers 0. Steeldogs go back to the top by one point but this may change on Sunday night as Telford Tigers are at home to the Hull Pirates and a win for the Tigers will take them back to the head of the conference as the 'Dogs' do not have a game.

Tonight's Results: Telford Tigers 5 Hull Pirates 4, Whitley Warriors 4 Blackburn Hawks 3. Contrary to my report of last night the Sheffield Steeldogs did have a game tonight at Solihull who the trounced with an emphatic 0-11 scoreline and takes the 'Dogs' back to the top.
The Nottingham Lions put up a solid performance up at Billingham. They Headed to the north east with a very short bench as the Nottingham 18s and 20s had games which meant a reduction in personnel. A couple of young guys from one of the Junior B Nottingham teams took advantage of some ice time when offered and travelled for this game. The Lions lost this one 5-1 with period scores 2-0/3-0/0-1. The scorer of the Lions goal was Kieran Raynor unassisted. I believe this might be the first period that the Lions have won this season taking the third period in this game. Miles Finney returned a 93.06% save rate.

Sunday: Blackburn Hawks v Telford Tigers, Sheffield Steeldogs v Solway Sharks, Hull Pirates v Solihull Barons, Billingham Stars v Sutton Sting.
The Nottingham Lions are at home to David Longstaff's Whitley Warriors who presently sit in 5th place in the conference. This is the final game in the series against the Warriors this season and on their last visit they took the game 1-9. If I remember rightly this game had some rather unique officiating that created a certain amount of discontent on the Nottingham bench with numerous penalties being awarded for no obvious reason, well not to the bench anyway. Hopefully this game will see tempers a little more controlled and some decisions making a modicum of sense, we live in hope as there is little else on occasions. Face off is at the earlier time of 5.30pm with cheap seats always available and some decent family deals.

Steeldogs, Tigers and Pirates have opened up a significant gap between themselves and the rest of the conference, and look to be having a three way battle for honours.
The Nottingham Lions having achieved a 0-0 first period missed out in the second as at around 24 mins they conceded the first goal. Having hit the third period and having defended so well against the Warriors onslaught to hold the game to just the one goal the Lions hit penalty trouble. The Warriors took full advantage due to the penalties to concede three unanswered powerplay goals and wrapped up the game 0-4. The Lions were still missing their highest scoring players Ruskin and Pywell and that situation went against the home team. Some new faces in the Lions as more juniors were introduced to the Moralee Conference.

Tonight's Results: Whitley Warriors 8 Solihull Barons 5 Telford Tigers 6 Solway Sharks 5 Billingham Stars 2 Blackburn Hawks 6
The Nottingham Lions travelled light once more to the third placed Hull Pirates and went down 14-2. In the first period the Lions lost Ben Wilson and that provided the Pirates with a 5 min power play that saw 3 goals added to their score. Fortunately both Cameron Pywell was back from injury and Ruskin Hughes from holiday and it was these two top scorers who provided the Lions with their two goals in the game. Goalie duties were shared between Miles Finney, who got his first assist, and Massimo Agostini. Joe Gretton stepped into the Captain's role tonight as Luke Thomas was not available. A heavy loss but when you take a look at the game sheet it was the usual culprits sharing the spoils for the Pirates. Period Scores: 6-0/5-1/3-1. Scorers: Cameron Pywell 1+1, Ruskin Hughes 1+1, Joe Gretton 0+1 and Miles Finney 0+1.

Weekend Games: Saturday: Solway Sharks v Blackburn Hawks Sutton Sting v Telford Tigers
Sunday: Blackburn Hawks v Sheffield Steeldogs Sutton Sting v Solway Sharks Telford Tigers v Whitley Warriors Billingham Stars v Hull Pirates Nottingham Lions v Solihull Barons
Nottingham Lions visitors on Sunday are the Solihull Barons who have suffered a rather tough time of late by struggling to put a good run of results together. They will, of course, be looking to end that poor run here in Nottingham. This season the Barons have played the Lions twice and took both games quite comfortably therefore they will head here to complete the treble and get back on track. Always a strong team and with both Elliot Perrin, ex Lions captain, and Paul Stanley also a recent acquisition from the Lions in the Barons line up they will be seeking both a solid performance and a big win on their former home ice. I note that another former Lion Thomas Soar has moved south and linked up with Streatham in the South 1 Britton Conference. A 6.00pm face off means an earlier finish so come along with the family and enjoy possibly the cheapest night of ice hockey, at this level, in the country.

cooperm4n; Thank you for spotting the not so deliberate mistake, it is a 7.30pm face off. I looked at the game below the Lions on Moralee site which happens to be Billingham v Solihull and does not take place until next Saturday. Should have gone to, you know where. Nevertheless cheap seats are still available. I think I've heard/read that line elsewhere. Profuse apologies.

Hi Iginla, always entertaining. There have been some rather large scores this season, our netties have been busy. I think ours is more akin to 'louder the roar Oh bugger the score' lets get more of our kids playing at a higher level.

The Nottingham Lions came up against some problems with the officiating of the game against the Solihull Barons and it appears to occur on each occasion that particular officials visit Nottingham. Lots of penalties and a good many scraps to keep the game lively for the players and supporters. I believe the temperature at bench level reached boiling point on a number of occasions. Final score Nottingham Lions 2 Solihull Barons 8. The young guys gave a good account of themselves and withstood the pressure and the level of intimidation that nearly always occurs when the Lions meet the Barons. A late face off did not help matters.

Looking at the game sheet the Lions racked up 62 mins in penalties against the Barons who themselves achieved a total of 34 mins. Luke Thomas the Lions captain must have got pretty teed off with the situation as he racked up 36 mins and that is most unusual for him. Spoke briefly with the Lions bench who made it clear that they stated that no matter how many mins the guys got hit for in this game they would play on and not be fazed by some of the decisions against them. Anyway the points scorers in the game were: Luke Gerald Evans 1+0, Thomas Palmer 1+0, Cameron Pywell 0+2, and Ruskin Hughes 0+1.Even though short handed for much of the game the Lions managed the highest number of shots on goal banging in 31. Alan Levers and Miles Finney shared the goal keeping duties. On a personal note I do wonder how many times officials ref at certain rinks in a season and turn up with fixed ideas about a team based on past games. What I mean is how objective are some officials and what influences their decision making on occasions, is it the game on the night, or past experience?
