Does none else on this thread use Tapatalk? If so, do you also have the same problem as me where this thread keeps appearing even though I have read it? It just doesn’t disappear I use tapatalk, and one thing I've noticed is that for stickied threads (like this one), it basically appears twice so you need to read the stickied and unstickied version, else it will always show that one of them has updates. Hope that makes sense.

I'll be in Hull for Lions @ Pirates in November. Chip spice? Naturally Nice one... Will you be making any of the home games this season? That's the plan.

A big welcome back to Jamie Hovell who has been a regular on the Lions defensive unit for quite a few seasons. Jamie has also fitted in a more utility role when called upon as he has experience up front on the wing. Jamie's brother netminder Tom Hovell has decided to make a move and has signed for Telford Tigers. More signings to come before the first home game against the formidable Sheffield Steeldogs.

The Lions have signed their second import as Jakub Pniok returns for his second season in the black and gold. Jakub proved to be a real grafter but not a big points scorer his contribution to the team last season was his work rate and that alone won him a number of MOMs. Every team requires a 100% commitment and the Lions have a great many players exhibiting this week in and week out and that is what Jakub brings to the team every shift. Jakub’s brother Ondrej has moved on therefore he will not be returning but we warmly welcome back the other half of the brotherly duo.

Twenty year old defenceman Jordan Wright has signed for the 2018/19 season and is another very welcome returnee for the Lions coming campaign. Jordan became a fully fledged Lion last season having transitioned from the Nottingham junior system. He certainly fitted in well and adjusted to the more intense game at this level. With support from the coaches and the more seasoned players this time around, no doubt, he will be looking to be make a greater impact out on the ice . He has a lot of potential and the size to accompany it. Welcome back young man.

Ruskin Hughes returns for another season with the Nottingham Lions having had a cracking first season back following two years in Canada. He made quite an impression on his return with 21 points in 26 games and hopes to better that tally this coming season. With all players a settling in period is expected but Ruskin, in his first season, quickly made his mark and became an integral part of the Lions strike force. Good to see him back.

Gotta be the cheapest deal around to watch some senior hockey here in Nottingham as the Lions freeze ticket prices for the up and coming season. Here we go: Adult £5.00 plus 2 under 16s with them free, and only £3.00 for additional accompanying children. Panthers season ticket holders and students £3.00. Remember this is the league below Panthers with some good teams visiting the Lace City throughout the season.

Two new additions to the Lions line up with Lewis Jones, Haringey Huskies and formerly Sheffield Senators, and Callum Medcalf, Peterborough Phantoms arriving. Lewis is a defenceman coming up 22 yrs of age and having played the majority of his hockey in the NIHL 2. Callum Medcalf is also a defenceman and is 19 yrs of age with his hockey career predominantly in the NIHL 2 but having played a few games for the senior Phantoms team. This will be a big step up for both players but with a hard work ethic and sticking with the game plan they could really achieve something over the season with the Lions. With the roster filling up pressure does begin to rise for places and that has to be a good sign. The baptism of fire commences with the visit of last seasons 'top dogs' as a much strengthened Sheffield Steeldogs hit Nottingham on 2nd September. No easy games envisaged and that is guaranteed, so better be ready guys! Remember cheap seats always available at a Lions game so give us a visit.

Two signings and a welcome back for Luke Smith on defence for the Lions, I think, for his third season, I lose track these days, and it is really good to see the big guy back in the black and gold. Still a young player and developing well since the move from Coventry Blaze to the Lace City. Now what can be said that’s new about the signing of the legend that is Alan Levers who makes his umpteenth return to the team for the 2018/19 season. So great to see this guy back with the team and his wealth of experience will prove invaluable for young netminder Ash Smith as he makes his debut for the Lions this season.

It does not get much tougher than this as the Nottingham Lions travel to Telford Tigers on Saturday and then meet up in Nottingham on Sunday against the Sheffield Steeldogs. Last season's Northern Play Off Champions one night followed by the visit of the Conference Champions the next. The Lions will have a bit of a new look with the number of additions to the team having their first run out against the fiercest of challenges over the first weekend of the season. These games will provide an indication of how the teams have strengthened with new signings during off season. The teams they face have certainly strengthened from my first look at the rosters with the Steeldogs adding a stand out player in Nathan Salem from the Peterborough Phantoms.

The Nottingham Lions announced another addition to the squad with the signing of Tom Parkinson a 22yr old forward from the Blackburn Hawks. Tom spent his earlier days with the Cardiff Junior system until u18s and then moved to play for a number of the Sheffield teams including the Spartans, Scorpions and Steelhawks before his move to the Blackburn Club in 2016.A warm welcome to Tom and hope that he settles in to the Lions for the up and coming season.

Good to see the return of Kieran Raynor to Nottingham after a couple of years with the Peterborough organisation. Joined Nottingham as a junior at u16 age group from Peterborough 2012/13 season and made his mark both at club level and for England. He made the move up to the Lions whilst also playing at u18 and u20 for the Cougars and the Leopards. He made the move back to Peterborough during the 2016/17 season playing for their NIHL 2 team the Islanders that latterly became Phantoms 2 in the Southern NIHL 2. Can play both ends of the ice and has no fear of getting in the mix in games. Kieran is predominantly remembered as a defenceman. Good to see how this now 20yr old deals with the move to the Northern NIHL 1 and the pressures that brings with it. Welcome back Kieran.
Weekend Games: Saturday: Hull Pirates v Whitley warriors, Billingham Stars v Sheffield Steeldogs, Telford Tigers v Nottingham Lions.
Sunday Games: Whitley Warriors v Telford Tigers, Blackburn Hawks v Hull Pirates, Solihull Barons v Billingham Stars, and Nottingham Lions v Sheffield Steeldogs.
The only change from last season in the teams in NIHL 1 Moralee Conference is that Deeside Dragons have returned to NIHL 2 Laidler Conference and have been replaced by Sutton Sting who make a welcome return to NIHL 1.

Tonight’s results: Hull Pirates 8 Whitley Warriors 1, Billingham Stars 3 Sheffield Steeldogs 4, and Telford Tigers 12 Nottingham Lions 1. All of the top three teams from last season got off to winning starts tonight with last year’s play off champions demolishing a much changed Lions team on their first away outing together. Noticed a heck of a lot of new names tonight with a number obviously up from the juniors. Missing a few of the seniors so some NIHL 1 experience for the youngsters and some of the new additions to the team. Period scores 4-0/2-0/6-1. The duck was broken at around 50 minutes when Ruskin Hughes scored unassisted. Hull saw off Whitley with ease but last year’s conference champions the Steeldogs found it hard going at Billingham with a narrow win and possibly some relief in the ‘dogs’ dressing room. The Lions have their first home game against the Sheffield Steeldogs tomorrow night with a 7.30 face off. Some good prices for the game so bring the kids along and make it a family hockey night.

Tonight’s results: Whitley Warriors 2 Telford Tigers 8, Blackburn Hawks 1 Hull Pirates 5, Solihull Barons 4 Billingham Stars 5, and finally Nottingham Lions 0 Sheffield Steeldogs 11. Beginning to have a de ja vu feel as the top three from last season continue from where they left off. For the Lions meeting both Telford and Sheffield on their first weekend brings the reality of the gulf between those that can pay and those that absolutely cannot. For the players it will be tough but that was always expected, the hope will be that a couple of wins might be on the cards as the season develops.

It tells you something about the gutsy performance put in by the Lions when #35 Ash Smith, who was in goal for almost the entire game and who faced 45 shots in the first two periods (conceding on only 4 of those), gets Man Of The Match.
The Lions are well up against it in this division and no mistake, going up against teams who have a hell of a lot more resources than they do... but they don't give in.
(The Lions did light the lamp once tonight, but it got washed out - nobody seems to know why! Just one of those days...)

I think Shaggy puts all things Lions in perspective regarding the team and we have to be realistic as to what can be achieved within this team given that players are not bought in but brought in allowing them to face stronger opposition. Lots of the players are from the NIHL 2 looking to improve their game and a number of juniors on the development pathway who the Lions may ultimately lose as they develop beyond what the Lions can offer to keep them on board. Year to year this is going to be the case but make no mistake the players will give all that they can to carve out a result but there are going to be some heavy losses along the way and that is what was experienced this last weekend. Shaggy made mention of Ash Smith the 19 yr old goalie who came to the team and who will not have perhaps envisaged what was in store for him in the way of rubber he was to face this season but he will learn and deal with this in time. Over the two games for the first two periods the Lions managed to keep a very respectable scoreline only to fade in the third period giving up 6 at Telford and 7 against Sheffield and I am sure that the coaching staff will be looking to tighten up the Lions game over three periods and keep the scoreline within acceptable limits. There may be very few actual winnable games given the standard of team and experience they will be up against but hopefully the Lions will make each game a harder to win proposition for their opponents both at home and away.

Games this weekend: Saturday: Telford Tigers v Whitley Warriors, Solway Sharks v Sheffield Steeldogs, Sutton Sting v Hull Pirates.
Sunday: Hull Pirates v Sutton Sting, Sheffield Steeldogs v Telford Tigers, Solihull Barons v Nottingham Lions.
Be interesting to see how Sutton Sting manage their first games back in the NIHL 1 against formidable firepower in the Hull Pirates team. Steeldogs also have a tough call as they travel to Scotland to meet the Sharks before meeting the Tigers on Sunday. Whitley Warriors have their only game of the weekend against the Tigers who defeated the Warriors on their ice 2-8 last Sunday. The Lions travel to a very sore Solihull Barons team who lost their first home game against the Billingham Stars last Sunday. They will be looking for a big win to pacify their very animated fans after being made to see 'stars' last weekend. So yet another uphill battle for the Lions on the road.
