A strange game tbh. Hawks went 1-0 up after just 90 seconds with a short-hander from Hill. Lions equalise through Colegate on the PP, then the sides trade goals again with Davies scoring for the Hawks on another PP, then young Josh Ward gets his 2nd Lions goal in only his 3rd game. Ollie Lomax gets a 2+10 for Checking from Behind after just 12 minutes then gets another 10 for arguing the point with the ref! The 2nd saw neither team able to create an advantage - there were penalties on both sides but the Hawks continued to get called for silly things, and there seemed to be plenty of chat to the Ref.... (But then for a team that used to have Bobby Haig who always would be chatting to the officials after every period that's not a surprise!! ) The third was more of the same - both teams had patches of dominance but neither could really get the breakthrough in the start of the period anyway. Hawks had a goal disallowed for goalie intereference - which was a very good call to make IMHO. I originally thought it was for man in the crease but surprised to see the resulting penalty. Lions then scored twice - Colegate and Bullas scoring, before the Hawks pulled one back late on (scorer not announced and I don't have the gamesheet with me.) Set up a tense final 90 seconds - and had the game lasted 5 seconds longer then we might have scored a 5th on the empty net, as Marcus Maynard had a chance but there wasn't enough time on the clock.. TBH the Hawks were unlucky not to take at least a share of the points. The Lions shooting was woeful - we had tons of shots but not that many on target. Levers made some brilliant saves, but will definately want that first one back! It was a typical Hawks vs. Lions game - end to end, edge of the seat stuff. Lions are not the same side as last season, despite only making a few changes, we're definately missing Colm Cannon in defence but things will get better soon. Man of the Match awards went to NM Baxendale for the Hawks, and to Lions' Colegate.

Ollie Lomax gets a 2+10 for Checking from Behind after just 12 minutes then gets another 10 for arguing the point with the ref! Ollie Lomax is my favourite Hawk - if he's not doing this he's scoring an own goal. Well done to the Lions - Blackburn have always been a hardworking side and run us close every time but they never quite seem to have the quality to match us. I suppose this is what makes for entertaining games between the two sides. The Lions look strong going into what has to be a four point weekend - Newcastle have lost to Kingston and Whitley at home, as the Warriors humbled them 10-0. If we are to have any chance of retaining the title it's imperative to secure the points against struggling teams.

I see from Eurohockey via my dad that Colm Cannon (along with Nick Whyatt) has signed for Luik Bulldogs of Liege in Belgium. There's not been an official word from Lions' management about this yet so I thought I'd get in there first.
This is the sixth season I've watched Nottingham and IMO Colm was the second best d-man I've ever seen play for the Lions, behind Alex Karsay, but not by much.

Yep... tis true... Luik BulldogsDon't understand why a lot of the Belgian players have gone to CPL Funny Ice Hockey Team Luik... I mean, what a name!!! Don't forget that Nick is a former Lions player too, many moons ago.

Mmmm... that's a nice result, especially for an away game. Makes the home leg tomorrow night something to look forward to (for those who are interested - same time, same place - Olympic Rink, 7:15pm)
Nice to have all 4 goals from different scorers (and at least 2 different lines, I believe).

Just got back (well, got back a while ago but went to the pub first!)
An interesting game - the Vipers did not have any of the players who played ENL & Elite last season - and it's left a big whole in the team. They are not as organised as they have been and that's what hurt them.
Lions again had a number of chances, but couldn't capitalise on all of them. However Richard Griffiths did very well for his first-ever Lions shutout - although the Vipers did come close to scoring in the final few minutes.
Lions MoM was Joe Wightman, and Vipers was Kevin Foster.

Final score tonight:-
Nottingham Lions 6 - 1 Newcastlle ENL Vipers
To be honest, the Lions aren't playing at their full potential at the moment... but they're still getting used to a new coach and a new system. And but for a horribly unlucky bounce off the shoulder of one of his teammates, Alan Levers would have got the shutout tonight. The sign of a good team - playing at less than your best and still winning.
For the Panthers fans... Robert Lachowicz got the sixth goal... with only 0.6 seconds left on the clock! Talk about getting in at the last gasp...
Now for the Sheffield ENL Scimitars next Sunday in the Olympic Rink... now that should be a test!

The sign of a good team - playing at less than your best and still winning. I think it's the system that's the problem. Newcastle were poor last night and yes their goal was unlucky for Levers but it had been coming. I ran out of fingers and toes counting the number of times the Lions turned the puck over, and mostly it was from trying to play diagonal passes through the neutral zone. This tactic didn't work so well last night - two breakaway goals and a slapper off a faceoff were half our goals - but if we play that badly in our own zone against Sheffield next week we'll be slaughtered. The first two periods never seemed to get going last night - the third was much much better though. With Newcastle trying to get back in the game physically there were a lot of niggly penalties called, but I thought if there had been a fight it would all have kicked off in a repeat of Cardiff v Streatham, although presumably both teams would have served bans at the same time. I thought referee Hewitt made the game more interesting than it could have been. He seemed to enjoy calling elbows a lot, which is interesting, because it seemed for all the world like he didn't know his elbow from his ar[continued page 94]

Yup.
For those not going to see Panthers play the Caps then pop down to watch the Lions. It's a derby game, and we'll be up for revenge as they beat us on the opening day of the season.
Prices as on page 1 of this thread, and face off will be 7.15 (ish).

Two things from Sunday's game that deserve a mention on here. Firstly, it was good to see that the Friends of the Lions have now, at the suggestion of some fans, started ripping tickets and giving fans a "stub". It's not much, but it's a good start, and a simple way for real fans to show they have paid to get in and that they are not among the hockey-killing morons who sneak in to the games. Secondly, it was also good to get the first "goalie - sieve" moment of the season.

Which we also did last season. "Started" is hardly the appropriate word... Hmmm... a "sieve" who (deservedly IMHO) got the MoM award for the Newcastle team...? Ah well.

He still let in six goals, and had a margin of defeat greater than three. Those are the rules of the sieve. Also he was quite a flamboyant skater before and after the play so he deserves a bit of good natured stick for that.
Could anyone who was in Sheffield for the season opener give any insight into a) how they play and b) who to look out for (apart from goalie Dimitri Zimozdra)?

Sheffield were good value for their win. It didn't take them long to work out what the Lions' weak points were and they exploited them to full effect. Given that they had played Whitley the previous night you might have thought they'd be tired, bashed and bruised, but instead they played with the greater energy, effort and inspiration.
To bring up a quote from the aftermath of last week's game:
It's almost right, with the exception of the "slaughtered" bit.
The way we played against Sheffield last night reminded me of how this year's Division 2 sides played against us last season. They would sit in their own zone and try to lob it up the ice to a speedy forward. While that works occasionally, it tends to lead to free giveaways more frequent than wallcharts in the Guardian.
The team's passing really annoyed me last night. I know I'm labouring the point but we were playing in day-glo yellow, yet so many times the Lions instead couldn't see where their teammates were and gave the puck to a Sheffield player instead. Additionally, especially on powerplays, there was so much time wasted by cycling the puck, or extra passes made because players were reluctant to shoot. Too often by this time the chance had gone and the puck had been turned over.
For some reason last night the Lions players seemed afraid to use the boards unless it was to check someone. There is a lot to be gained from getting into the attacking half and dumping it in, just as a simple chip and go play can often lead to a scoring chance. What's more is that players can take the puck skating forwards, not receive it with their back to goal, which gives defenders every chance to check them or at least get in a position to defend against them.
Still, with a bit of luck last night's game will be our one dodgy one for the season, and the two training sessions between now and the Whitley game will be used to refine the tactics slightly. To all those going to the Frozen North, I hope you have a good trip, and I hope the team decides to show up as well.
