The Dark Knight I went to see this today and it is a truly great film, even if you do not like comic books characters it is a must see. Christian bale deserves an awful lot of credit, apart from the silly voice he plays the role so very well. ledger- he played all characteristics of the joker so well, the subtle humour, the complete raving lunatic, the utterly sadistic violent madman (the pencil scene for one). i was probably one of the most cynical peoplem with regards to judging his performance because of his untimely passing however he deserves everysingle piece of credit he gets for his portrayal of the joker the film itself-great action, funny moments, numerous characters with personal choices to have to deal with, some good twists along the way. this along with batman begins has brought back creditbility for the franchise after the utter shocker that was batman and robin. heres to hoping for another installment Saw it on Saturday and got to agree with everything Spence said here. Well worth the entrance fee.

The Dark Knight was absolutely fantastic & Ledger's performance was very very good. For those that haven't seen the film, go and see it and ignore the fact that Ledger is dead and take his performance for what it is. i think from the moment of ledgers death, this film had added success. popularity of the film had soared beyond fanboys, and now every man and his dog MUST see it because of his demise. I disagree that because of Ledger's death equates to the film being more of a success. I agree that his death will have generated more interest for those movie goers that aren't fans of that particular genre, but the movie didn't become a great movie because of Heath Ledger's demise.

The Dark Knight - better than any other superhero movie, but is so much more than just another superhero movie. Just an awesome crime/fantasy/action thriller.
And Ledger was incredible. But its not just him - Bale, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman are all brilliant.

Brilliant...utterly brilliant. This film has everything I want in a film, story, plot, action, special effects, great acting, & a great cast. It ticks all the right boxes. It's almost become a cliche - & I was suspecting it was simply because the guy is no longer with us - about how good Heath Ledger is in this film. I was neither a fan of his before, nor did I dislike his work - Now...I don't care if it's a cliche, I don't care if it's predictable to say...Heath Ledger STEALS this film, & he rocks. A truly, truly stunning performance, he's perfect for this role, & he plays the evilness of the Joker so well. The other actors, as great as they are, are almost reduced to 'bit players' & supporting roles. We seemingly have all been robbed of a very great talent. A fine film indeed. That sums it up for me. Absolute quality. Having only really remembered Ledger from A Knights Tale, I wasnt really expecting the quality that he gave. If he does get an oscar for it, then it is no less than he deserved. And before we start a rant about popstars, can we keep this thread on films please.

Going to see the Dark Knight next weekend, a pretty avid batman fan anyway, if Ledgers performance beats that of Nicholsons `89 performance, it must be good it helps the DK `s rationgs having Freeman, Caine and Oldman in it, the latter one of my favourite actors
HL will get a oscar im sure of and not just because hes deceased
On another note, The mummy is getting bad reviews, best to stay clear , its a poor follow on from the previous two.
Dan Browns second film Angels and Demons is supposed to be very good

Yeah my bad on the whole dead rock star thing.
The Dark Knight is so good. Need to go to see it again!
I hope the film of Angels and Demons is better than The Davinci Code! That was terrible!

Went to see the Dark Knight on Wednesday and it was good but not as good as I was expecting, same with Ledger's performance
Suppose with all the hype I was expecting to be really impressed and that just set me up for disappointment

I hope the film of Angels and Demons is better than The Davinci Code! That was terrible! Any film where tom hanks gets thrown out of a helicopter gets my vote! Anyone seen X files, was toying with the idea of going to see it but i have not seen to many good reviews.

just watched hellboy II. absolute toilet. Really? I was/am looking forward to seeing that. Any in-depth/further thoughts? its like it took a leaf out of george lucas' book of annoying characters. no story, horrendous dialogue. while the first one was great fun (not particularly a good film, but good fun) with the second, i wanted to turn it off half way through. the first 25 minutes or so were great, it started off immensely promising, but after that it just went downhill and didnt recover. i think my comment while i watched it summed it up 'there best be an amazing fight or ending to make up for this shower of poo poo'. needless to say, there wasnt. had i gone to the cinema, i'd have left feeling like i'd wasted the better part of a tenner.

I too loved The Dark Knight - thank goodness, always worrying when you're really looking forward to seeing a film, for fear of disappointment, Dark Knight didn't dissapoint at all. While Heath was great as the psychotic Joker (and he really was) I can't believe the performance is worthy of an Oscar (only my opinion, before you all kick off!). Then again, I guess we'll have to see what else is out before next Feb's Oscar night - lots of other performances to be rated. It's a shame that nobody is picking up on how great the guy that played Harvey Dent was, but in light of Heath's tragic demise, things were always going to be overshadowed My only gripe with the film was that they've ruined Gotham (again - my opinion - don't shoot me!) - it's lost all of its gothic freakiness and is now just New York. It's great that CGI has advanced so much and cityscapes are so real and believable, but in a dark, comic book film, I don't want it to be too real - maybe that's just me though. Would a grubby gargoyle or 2 be too much to ask?! edited to add - also seen 'man on wire' about the tightrope walker that walked between the twin towers, surprisingly good and nice to see a film with the towers in it from a different light.

what did you like about it so much? I'm a big Del Toro fan, so it was obviously right up my street. It's his imagination that comes to the fore all the time, surely you must have been impressed with how well the CGI merged in with the live-action? The storyline was standard fare, but it was still fairly gripping stuff just for the creatures and effects alone.

admittedly the flick was visually stunning, but that doesnt make a film. yes it was pretty, but there has to be some substance along with the style.
the film didnt feel like it flowed naturally, there was no build, there was an anticlimactic peak that left me feeling empty. you know how sometimes a film ends and you think 'is that it?', well yeah, thats how i felt. the story wasnt as good as the first, and while i realise they cannot replicate the first and must move onward, it seems like the golden army was an afterthought to a love story between two sets of characters. to me it seemed like a complete waste of what potentially could have been a great film, if it had a good story.
aside from the visuals, can you actually rate the film highly? like i said before, the characters were poor, i felt no alliance to any of them apart from the characters from the first film. the dialogue was horrendous, the film could have cut the drunk scene out completely. from del torro's previous films and the good (well, he made it fun and not a chore to sit through, unlike this one) first hellboy, i was left expecting a hell of alot more.

Went to see the mummy 3 last night, was ok but nothing special. Acting was cringeable (is that a word? If not it should be) at times. At a guess I'd say the budget had been considerably cut from the first two films.
Also I missed Rachel Weisz big time

Also I missed Rachel Weisz big time i went to see that a few weeks ago on the request of a friend. it was orange wednesday and i hadnt seen the other two, so i wasnt that fussed. what i got was a fun film that was incredibly silly, with good action. in fact i'd rate it higher than hellboy II. oh and a fight broke out in the cinema and the girl started it was dragged (by her hair) down the stairs by a man. it was pretty crazy.

Here's my review of Somers Town:
Shane Meadows, is a brilliant director, & he makes a simple story so engaging. Thomas Turgoose, shows again what a naturally talented actor he is - the lad deserves to go far. As said, the story is quite simple - but doesn't suffer unduly because of that. My only small criticism is the length. At 75 mins (Ok..I did know in advance it was short) I did feel slightly short changed. The last minute or two in Paris...why did it have to be so horribly rushed through? There was a good amount of story still left in that bit, & would habe bulked out this short film perfectly.
