Intresting points, pretty much the thoughts of the guys on the Notts forums. Southgate is being very well paid by the media to be out in South Africa for the world cup, which some have said rules him out as we need someone who can hit the ground running. Would be happy with Burley or Ince as either can do that. Suppose that depends on his contract / role out there and what he'll be used for - if he's more of an "England" analyst he could be home and ready to hit the ground running by 24th June :-)

Craig Short appointed new managerOne word...underwhelmed. The names Ince,Burley,Roeder, Southgate etc to name but a few were being banded about and weve been "sold Short" to make up the first pun! New director of Football TBA next week to work with him. I suppose it increases our chances of keeping the very impressive coaching staff together from last season. Hoddle strongly rumoured to be the director

The club has no money. Short is a cheapo option and I doubt the club were ever serious on getting a big name. Short won't have much in the way of demands.
As for Hoddle - if it's true then fair play. But I doubt anything the owners of Notts spin.

Hmmmmm. Of the other candidates you could chop and change them in some sort of 'preference' order however no matter which way you cut it Short would have been bottom of that list by some distance. I really thought it would be Ince, genuinely thought he was a guy who couldn't really expect to walk into a Championship club, Prem was 100% out of the question given his Rovers failure and this was a real opportunity to prove he has what it takes.
That said he's the man now so he needs to be given the time to do the job. For all the 'euphoria' that goes with promotion and the inevitable 'we are one step away from the Championship' type hype it needs to be remembered that Notts are still a club with some severe off the field funding problems which may well mean they don't have the sort of season some may be hoping for - I guess what i'm saying is I hope people don't get on his back just because he's not Ince/Southgate/Roeder, especially if things don;t go brilliantly in the first 5 - 10 games.

Wont argue with that. The fact hes a Notts legend means he will get a fair crack (lots didnt want Ince/Burley or Southgate, its not like there was an obvious candidate-there often isnt at our level) but the thing I worry about is contacts. We need a majority of a squad, will Craig Short know enough guys to tap up straight away? Ince/Burley and possibly Southgate would have done. Still, he has a good record and has the club at heart. Im happier than I was when we appointed Steve Thompson!

How does the transfer embargo sit with Notts now, or is it all over and done with.

How does the transfer embargo sit with Notts now, or is it all over and done with. There were 3 points we had to meet: 1) Pay 700k hard money to HMRC (Paid in full) 2) Get within the wage cap (there isnt one in L1 so no worries) 3) Owing money to "players". (reported by chairman as resolved.) I beleive the last point is Sol Campbell related. We owed money to a player who wasnt on the playing staff at the end of the season, but was registered with the PFA so SC seems obvious. So we are just waiting for confirmation and it should be sorted very shortly. Also, there were issues with the amount of people allowed in the ground which we have now met the conditions for that restraint to be lifted (The amount allowed was around 13,500 when the ground holds 20k in theory so a big difference). Apparently you only get issued Health and Safety certificates annually so we have to wait for the re-inspection which is in June.

A good start to the season fixture wise, Huddersfield at home. I said I want them at home first game of the season, and we got it I also called the Bradford fixture last summer, spooky. I didnt call a 5-0 win though, I think Id actually explode if we managed that again. Burch is a good signing, should be 2 big signings for us tomorrow, described as the chairman as "definite starters" which is a strong claim by anyone but a manager. Rumours are Spicer and Moloney. Id be delighted with either. As I write this, Sven is on my big screen TV working out how to stop Brazil! Was it really just a few months ago he was advising on how to approach Grimsby away?! It didnt sink in at the time, it never felt real to me, but now its "over", the reality is hitting home that this time last year, the circus was rolling into town. In other news, ticket prices are up (much to the dismay of some fans, but only up to similar prices around L1), the chairman continues to answer questions on the Notts forums much to the delight of the fans, and the announcement of the new Director Of Football continues to be delayed (rumours are that Glenn Hoddle pulled out at the last minute). Im sure we can survive without one personally!

Moloney signs on season long loan from Forest. Cheers guys I liked watching him last season, quick and aware defensively but very good going forward. I doubt Notts will see so much of him offensively in L1, but Im still excited about seeing him again.

You're very welcome, get him bulked up a bit if you don't mind, he's got a very bright future. I was told some time ago that he was not for sale at any price (this was before he went on loan to Notts last term) but I genuinely thought the club might have changed their views on that more recently and he was going to make a perm move. Seems that those same people within the club (Forest) still have some influence. The lad has a cracking attitude as well. I sometimes wonder just how far a guy like Reidy would have gone had he displayed the same attitude as Brendan.

Apparently he hasn't signed? You've only enquired. So it would appear. How strange. Not sure whether its Craig Short talking out of turn or the NEP getting it wrapped round their neck, but if the deal doesnt go ahead it makes Notts and the NEP look bad.

To be fair the sky sports article says the lad has agreed and BD has no issue with it which is probably correct on all fronts. Interesting to see what happens from here in! www.skysports.com/story/0,19528,11727_6227844,00.html

Apparently the NEP were trigger happy and printed without confirmation, then others followed. By all accounts its a done deal pretty much, but still being finalised.
The other name that wont go away is Lee Carsley. Would be a very useful addition IMO as the squad is still pretty young and he could still do a job in L1.

Hughes signs a contract extension and as predicted previously, Notts sign John Spicer from Donny.
Very impressed. Iv rated Spicer for a while, confident he will do a big job in L1. The rumours about Burgess stay strong too, although Deon Burton has said we have offered him a contract. Happy with the names we are being linked with. Added onto the quality weve still got in the team, its shaping up to be a very competetive squad!

Spicer's a good player, will do a good job. Not sure on Burton, never really rated him, but then having said that when he played for them lot he lived in Nottingham throughout so he's clearly got some taste if nothing else..... :-)

Edit:
Burgess has also signed. Having started 20, and coming on 15 times for a promotion winning Championship team hes a massive signing for any L1 side.
Im well chuffed. Of all the names being thrown about, I really wanted 3 to sign.... Burgess Moloney and Spicer. 2 are done, the third looks 99%. With Jackson coming back aswell from his loan spell at Charlton, hes like a new signing too.
Agreed PIM, Im not convinced about Burton but with Hughes and Burgess looking like starters, and Hawley looking to get more football this season, he wouldnt be the franchise player by any stretch.

Burgess is a very good signing for Notts. You should have the firepower to score a fair few goals next season.

Fancy buying a football club just so you can eventually own a rugby club!! This story is starting to roll. The suggestion that the rugby club was the main reason that Trew bought Notts. Having said that, I do think they are putting a good team together, that could well be challenging at the right end of the table.

I have to say I am very happy with the side so far - keep injury free and we'll do alright - if any ones intrested Hughesy is at 16/1 with some bookmakers for top goal scorer in the league - could be worth a few quid with his pedigree.

Why bump a sticky thread?! Of course, if you mean "back to earth with a..." your dead right The rugby club deal was to add to the PLC's portfolio and attract a new set of potential investors. Its fully explained several times by the man himself. I presume getting Notts, to acquire the rugby team is a joke right? The millions hes put into Notts and the amounts its cost him to keep us out of admin, just to pickup some struggling tin pot rugby team (sorry to the Nottm rugby fans, but thats how I see it)? Dont think so. Notts were shocking Saturday. Weve built a footballing club over the last couple of years, played pretty much every L2 team off the pitch last season, outplayed an established Premier league team twice and generally built solid foundations. Craig Short has undone that already and for the first time in around 3 years I felt robbed coming away from a game. Long ball football with a team of good players, on a perfect pitch in perfect conditions. We had less chances than Huddersfield had goals, we havnt been that outplayed for a long time. As good as Huddersfield were and Joey Gudjonssen is just far too good for L1, the times we did get on the ball we were shocking!

Has he put millions of his own money into Notts? Did he have millions to put in?
I'm a blind Bambi when it comes to Notts/Trew now as I didn't think he had that sort of cash.
