Very disappointing batting performance from us. We bowled ok though Australia batted horribly - which was nice. But we've undone it all with a lack of basic defensive technique. Maybe we should get Boycott to give them some coaching! The wicket seems to be deteriating already which suggests batting from Saturday onwards is going to be tough. We need a 1st innings lead but look set to fail to post 100.

Well this wasn't too good was it. Thought we were actually in with a chance when Aussies were all out for 190!
I really can't see us winning this series now. 4-0 Australia.

Today just told us what we already know: both teams have good bowling attacks, McGrath is sheer class, our bowlers bowl a few too many poor balls still, our openers don't have a clue how to deal with GM, Giles can't play bouncers, Vaughan is hoplessly out of nick, KP isn't just a slogger, Freddy isn't a genuine #6, Hayden is not in good form, some Aussies batsman are still prone to playing too many shots. Ultimately, we probably won't win the Ashes 'til McGrath and Warne have retired.

Aussies are building up a significan lead. Anything more than 300 to chase this weekend is likely to be too much for us. Graham Thorpe has retired from international cricket. He is putting his private life ahead of his England career. Not for the first time! At least now we won't have to put up with people asking for his recall. He should never have been recalled two years ago.

We go from being in with a chance to losing it 4-0 after a first innings in which we end up 35 off of their score? I ate it when the fairweahter cricket fans crawl out of the woodwork and pretend they know what they're on about when the Ashes roll around. I'm not saying you're one of them, but it is a particularily fairweather thing to say. We're still in with a chance, keep the faith.

I think we have a chance but it is a very very slim one

Shock, horror. G Jones drops a catch which he should've left for first slip! Sooner rather than laster he's gonna drop someone like Gilly and then we'll really pay for his inclusion ahead of Chris Read.

Well I've just had my rant on talkSPORT.
Everything McGrath and Warne predicted has come true. Tresco, Strauss, Vaughan, Bell and Freddy all getting out in predictable manner. Jones can't catch which is a disadvantage for a 'keeper. And Giles is the only spinner in cricket who can't spin the ball. But our pace attack is as effective as hoped.
I need beer!

What I meant was, we wasted a great chance of winning the first test. If we can't do it when we had them out for 190, what chance do we have in the other tests?! Where did I say we were in with a chance? I said that we will put up a good fight, which we have done, but I didn't say we were in for a good chance. Our batsmen are out of form, and can't handle McGrath or Warne. I'm entitled to my opinion! Hopefully they will prove me wrong, but I just don't think we have what it takes.

Like I said on page1 of this thread, we have more chance of losing 5-0 than we do of regaining the Ashes. Just imagine what Warne and MacGill will do at Old Trafford when it's turning sideways. And the only England batsman who can pick Warney is KP.
G Jones and Giles must go now. But they won't. Vaughan and Fletcher should hang their heads in shame.
Oh well. 13 days to the footee season.

we can win it Spike, we can win 4-1. What is it with everyone? We were truly awful yet we only lost by 250. I know that's a lot but usually we'd have been spanked by an innings. It's not over yet.

We effectively was spanked by an innings! 250 runs is more than we made in either innings. They scored more in their 2nd innings than we did in the match. Hell we didn't make 350 in two innings and if it wasn't for KP we'd have been completely humiliated. Again. For the first time since we toured Sri Lanka we are playing a quality team. Sri Lanka beat us up and nothing much has changed. We're playing 5 proper batsman and 4 of them are like rabbits trapped in headlights. Then we've got a genuinely good bowler who is only a modest batsman coming in at #6 and he's hardly batted all Summer. If Freddy didn't bowl he wouldn't make the team on his batting alone so he should bat at #7 like Kapil Dev, Richard Hadlee, Wasim Akram and Imran Khan did. Our 'keeper is a joke and we might as well be playing with 10 men for all the use Giles is. Thank the gods we have a good pace attack. Some of the comments made before this series in the media were an absolute joke. Guys like Botham and Nasser are now having to eat their words. McGrath and Warne admit they were wound-up by the over-the-hill jibes by Hoggard and now they're determined to beat us 5-0. We're going to be competitive during the individual matches but the series score will still look like a thrashing. That'll be harsh as we're closer than 4-1 or 5-0. But we won't win back The Ashes until McGrath and Warne have retired or are truly past it. Maybe in 18 months time. Probably in 4 years time. You can stick a fork in this series.

BUT when they only score 190 in the first inning then losing by 250 is shocking now if they had two 500+ run innings losing by 250 runs wouldn't off been bad if we had played like we did this week

An immeadiate improvement would be to get rid of Geriant Jones & put Chris Read behind the stumps. I doubt we'd see any catches dropped by him as he's a quality keeper.

Fantastic tactical move by Fletcher. He won't play any of our players in 4 day cricket this week. Rather than be in the middle Vaughan and co will be having nets! Only Simon Jones, KP and GBH should be rested this week. Hell, the Test only last 3 days! An immeadiate improvement would be to get rid of Geriant Jones & put Chris Read behind the stumps. I doubt we'd see any catches dropped by him as he's a quality keeper. If Jones is still 'keeper at Trent Bridge than he might get booed by the crowd. I'll try not to join in! I suspect Read will have to outscore Prior to force his way back into the team. Read's advantage is that it'll be at Trent Bridge. Same for Swann.

Read's batting is on a par with Prior's i would say, and Read is the vastly superior keeper. I don't see what the big problem is but if England not selecting him means that we get to keep Ready for the title chase then i'm all for it.

I don't see what the big problem is but if England not selecting him means that we get to keep Ready for the title chase then i'm all for it. Jones: First-class matches 49 inns 67 runs 2123 top score 108* average 36.60 Prior: First-class 81 127 4411 201* 38.35 Read: First-class 149 225 5495 160 29.07 Glovework i'd say it's Read followed by Prior followed by Jones. Batting is Prior followed by Jones followed by Read. Prior is very destructive but also plays a lot to the leg side. A lot like KP. Prior was also born in South Africa! I'd choose Read as the glovework is the most important factor. None of the 3 will score runs against Australia. I ain't bothered if it affect Notts one iota. The counties are there purely to benefit England.

Read's batting takes into account all 149 of his first class outings, even i will admit he was hardly the finished article when he set out. If you take the last 30 first class games the three have played im sure it will be a lot closer.
