While rummaging through a yet to be unpacked box (eight months after we moved house) earlier today, I came across a couple of videos. I decided to check what was on them to see if I could use them again. One was some rubbish movie which I never remember watching.
The other was a Panthers game which I'd recorded on Sky. An 8-1 thrashing of the Manchester Storm at the Ice Stadium to be precise! I remember the match, but couldn't remember when it was. A look on Panthers History tells me it was January 4th, 1997.
I was wondering how often over the years that Panthers games have been broadcast live on television. The only other game I have which I recorded from Sky was the 1998 B&H Cup Final win over Ayr.
When I was very young, before I started attending, I vaguely remember watching a game live on Grandstand simply because my grandma was there. I think that might have been the 1985 Autumn Cup final, but couldn't say for sure.

Grandstand used to broadcast games about once a month at one stage, so the Panthers were on relatively often in those days.
In fact the first live broadcast (other than playoffs or finals) on Grandstand was a Panthers v. Dundee Rockets game, ca. 1985, which saw the face off time moved from Saturday evening to the mid-afternoon, an unpopular move (some things never change!). I remember watching a live Panthers game from Billingham, where our goalie Brian Cox went off for a delayed penalty early in the game and commentator Barry Davies thought we were pulling the goalie ("what a strange thing to do at this stage in the game" I recall him telling the viewers at home!). Unfortunately I don't have either of these on video for posterity.
I do have the 1986 Norwich Union final, which is probably the one you mention. That was a great match at the NEC with decent coverage, they even delayed their coverage of other sports for the OT!
I believe I have, or can get my hands on, most of the Wembley playoffs in the later Heineken days (1990-96), as well as some other memorable games like our B+H run from 94 (semis and final, which I think I now have on DVD as well) from the Sky coverage. In the ISL era, the Panthers seemed to be on Sky quite often. I think they knew they would normally get a good game in a great atmosphere in our stadium! Got plenty of them as well.
Always great to look back over the "old days" from the TV coverage. And if you have friends who sat in areas of the crowd that were often shown (behind the benches or block 1 near the scoreboard), you can watch them growing older on the screen. In fact, you can judge when the game is from by looking at people you knew in the crowd shots, you don't have to actually see any of the players.

I have a few.. i was looking back and seen some from Channel 4 Ayr Vs Sheffield Steelers at Belfast. And the B&H final 98 ;D and the Play Off Weekend 1998. And a few odd matchs on Sky Sports.
I miss the live matches on Sky.

Wasnt it stopped broadcasting on after one of the refs (Hanson?) had a mic (so viewers could hear what he was saying) and a player disputed a call with him....
His rather sharp reply, broadcast live was
'I dont makes f***ing rules do I!' or something similar

His rather sharp reply, broadcast live was 'I dont makes f***ing rules do I!' or something similar I think you must be thinking of the ref in the 1999 Challenge Cup semi final, Cardiff v. Panthers. Steve Carpenter questioned a call and Kirkham's reply was "I don't make the ****ing rules Steve". I'm not sure whether he was mic'ed up or not or if it was just picked up by one of the mics around the rink (Nico Toeman was once mic'ed up for a live game on Grandstand where a similar thing happened). Don't think the incident led to any action being taken though, certainly the BBC showed the second leg and final later the same season. Sky's coverage ending was simply down to money as far as I recall.

Sky's coverage ending was simply down to money as far as I recall. I think the SuperLeague asked for more money than Sky were prepared to pay so British hockey all but disappeared from the television, apart from a few highlight shows from the Playoffs which were shown on the BBC and later on Sky.

Infact the Panthers Vs Dundee Rockets back in 1985 was the first hockey game I've been to!! and the rest as they say was history.

I think it was the 1995 final which was filmed by Sky. My best mate and I had had quite a few and had our faces painted. Sky asked to interview a few of us. How glad am I that I don't still have a copy of that one!

I've got two old videos entitled:- 1993-94 Season Part One. Premier League and Benson & Hedges Cup 1994 Benson & Hedges Cup I think I taped the B&H Cup final against the Devils, in which Blaiser scored a hat trick, at the end of one of them. There's also the famous Hunty double hat-trick against the Racers on there somewhere. It's a shame with all the computer anoraks on the list we can't get them together and turn out some DVDs at a reasonable price.

I remember watching Panthers against someone on Sky during the 1998-99 season in the student union. The place was deserted that night so they put it on, and kept it on for the entire game. It was nice to have pints and watch hockey in a big comfy chair
