Another bit of an oddity. The number was in constant use for the first 12 years after we came back, but no-one really made it their own. A couple of our better british players from the early days, Gary Clarson and Mark Goldby, took it on, before Craig Melancon famously wore it for half a season in 1987/88.
Melancon was another prime example of hated opponents coming here and going from zero to hero almost overnight. Small of stature, extremely fiery on the ice, almost painfully shy off it, he was involved in many spats in games against us, but his extraordinary speed created lots goals for Streatham. It is safe to say that anyone who saw Melancon play never forgot the experience. I am sure Melancon himself won’t forget the night in the old barn when, as he sat a penalty for yet another outburst, a giant dummy was thrown from the crowd, landing right at his feet. He dispatched it whence it came with considerable force.
Mention also for Chris Dilks, who was tragically killed last year.
The seven seasons this number fell out of use from 1995 to 2002 is exceeded only by the nine seasons we had no number 8 after John Bremner retired.
