Mainly the preserve of two very popular players for our club.
Firstly Russ Timmins. Can there ever have been a player so well liked but who got so little ice time? I think everyone liked Russ but although he dressed for over 200 games he hardly ever got the nod to get out there. When he hung his skates up, he became coach of our U-16 Cougars team and coached them to the national U-16 Championship at Wembley in 1988.
He came from Sheffield, which made things interesting coming home from games in the north during the miners strike. There were often police checks on the A1 to stop flying pickets and when we got stopped, Timmins, who often came back on the fans' bus, would insist on shouting out from the back, 'everything al reet officer' in his best Yorkshire accent. Sadly Russ died in 1995 from a brain tumour. He was just 34 years old.
The other main custodian was Simon Hunt, one of the most successful graduates of our much envied junior production line at that time. Hunty was a real handful for opposition teams, and was adept at getting under the skin of other players with his all-action style. Occasionally he got some back, notably in the 1992 Championship final at Wembley when he got well shaken up after his head coincided with a high stick from a wiley old pro who'd had enough of this pesky little troublemaker. That old pro was one M Blaisdell.
In recent years the number was worn by Robert Stancok, in my humble opinion one of the finest defencemen ever to ice for Panthers.
