Appreciate that Rich, thanks dude I'll do that. I was planning on coming up this thursday before I had my spill. Am on crutches now and start physio next week. I hope he'll have me up and about soon as I want to get back on the ice, we'll have that temporary rink up in Lincoln in a couple of weeks so it'll be good to go have a gentle skate to help with my rehabilitation!
Injury sucks big time dont it? I've never been so bad tempered! Grrr!

This is just Skate UK which I reckon is a good place to start. £37.50 and you just need skates. Hockey is on a Wednesday night and is slightly more - check out the NIC website has info there! You can hire skates for Skate UK though can't you? When I did Skate UK a couple of years ago, it was included in the price as well. Things may of changed now though

sorry, yes you do get hire skates free, I meant you only need to wear skates and no other "kit" Gloves can be quite useful too ;D You only need to complete Skate UK grade 4 to be able to start ice-hockey sessions on Wednesday nights (this is for under 16s though I believe). For the Wednesday night training, you need; own skates, neck guard, helmet, gloves and stick. Once you have completed EIHA grade 3 on Wednesday nights, you can then move on to Fridays and continue 'til EIHA grade 6. For the Friday sessions, you will need the full kit. I'm currently at grade 4 on the Friday sessions and training with the Vipers. EIHA training on Wednesdays and Fridays is for the junior teams as far as I'm aware, and I'm not sure of the alternatives for adults. Nutty, saw you and PP watching the Vipers training on Friday night, thinking of joining? ;D

Bummer about the Ice Tigers... I coach/train with the uni team on Wednesdays 9pm to 12.15am so I stand no chance of getting there. However, the NIC often has conversions and events, so we lose our ice time. I may be able to find my way up to Sheffield then, if that's ok. I know most of the Sheffield lasses, so that will be kool!!

In EIHA the other week, they were saying to the group about how you need to be going to 4 or 5 public sessions a week to improve! It costs about £4 to a public session (even though I've applied for a discount pass because of Vipers!), and if you're going 5 times a week, that's about £20! It's all a bit expensive to me at the moment, as I'm paying £48(I think!) for the EIHA course per 6 weeks, then paying £30 a month for Vipers, then ontop of that paying for public sessions

its not cheap, its around £600 a year to play for sheffield shadows so id expect vipers to be similar. Then add travel, skating grades and other skating sessions, equipment etc! not cheap but worth it!

I know the feeling. I'm one of four kids, who at one point were all playing hockey. My sister never had the passion for the game, whereas Si, the older brother was a natural but didn't like his team mates in juniors and quit. Nick still plays for Solihull Barons and has iced for the Panthers too!!
I play for Kingston Diamonds in WPL so the travelling is crazy, plus trips to Cardiff for Wales training. Petrol money all adds up!! It all depends on how committed you are and how much you want to do it. I've recently changed jobs to accommodate my hockey!!
However, I do know one family with 2 kids (1 girl and 1 boy) and their parents travel everywhere. Last season they spent £13,000 on hockey for all 4 of them. They were wanting to know if there's any financial support available. I mean that's just crazy!!!!

Someone I know recently tried out for conference, and to be insured for conference it costs £2000 a year and that's just at under 12s level! So don't know whether it's the same for every other age group. Hockey is a sport which doesn't come to you. There are football teams all around the country that are very close to you, but with hockey you need to travel for the rink. Same with all ice sports. Not many people live close to a decent rink.

Yeah, I've played for Wales and Northern Conference (until they changed the rules saying I couldn't play for both.) I've never had to fork out more that the £5 for training and £30-odd for the shirt.

I'm only going by something my mum said a few weeks ago. She said she wasn't looking forward to my brother getting to conference standard because someone who he knew has to pay £2000 if they get in. Not 100% sure though, just going by what my mum said!

Im going to university next year and have gotten an offer from nottingham (university of) I know they have a team but what kind of level is it at? I have alot of experience at roller hockey and can skate well on ice but have no UK grades. What would I need to be up to a uni level? Do they have a roller team? Thanks for any information

Sharkie,
Nottingham Uni have 4 teams:
*The Div 1 (A) team is equivalent to the Lions (some may disagree with that!!!). This is for league players, internationals and is pretty good! *The Div 2 (B) is a good standard, but is mixed. I play for them!! There are some roller players who's skating needs to be fine tuned, other than that, their hockey is pretty good. *The Div 3 (C and D) teams are for absolute beginners. The C team learned to skate last year and will be moving up to Div 2 next year (I think that is the plan) and the D team are learning to skate this year. They'll hopefully be playing games in the next few months.
All in all, I'm sure we can fit you into the A or B team. You don't need grades, we just assess your standard. But rest assured, you would be coming to the best team in Britain. Don't forget there's the GB Uni team to aim for too!!
There's also a Nottingham Uni Roller Hockey team, and several of the guys play for both. I can give you contact details for them too.
PM me your email address, and I'll give it to Si Hopkins, our coach. Other than that, come down to our B team games this week and see what you think (see the main forum for the game details).
Congrats on your offer btw!!
