Obviously its not a sport you grow up playing over here and all the sessions seem to be aimed at younger players than myself (19).
Is there anywhere a flat beginner could start?

As you are 19, its a bit late to start doing skating and hockey grades, so your best off joining Ashfield Avalanche which is a mens hockey team. Its nothing big and there are all sorts of standards there. If you want to know more, PM me and i will give you any details you want.

Best advice is to learn to skate fairly well, dunno if you can or not now, then go to a Rec team like Bretters suggests!! I will be joining a Rec team next year when I can drive and I'm old enough!!

I've always wanted to play hockey. I've played roller hockey, but I never seem to have the time to suit up & join a rec team. Coventry Chaos would be the nearest one for me

I take it the ice tigers are men only due to "contact"? Nope, its a mixed team ... there's a couple of girls on the team ... and they're good too! Tigers, although a checking team, can play non-checking games. Rich is good like that

Rich is good like that When you say the girls are good how good??? The two girls that train with us are women's division one standard, so quite good. I would say that they are about the same standard as some of the Nottingham vipers players, although our only registered girl last year was Heja

God I was a kid when I played rollerhockey. Played netminder, wasn't great to be honest - shoddy 2nd hand loaned kit didn't help (leg pads were battered so badly I remember letting a few slide through the pads where they were soft ). Wouldn't mind giving it a go playing D or something... I just never know how to get started really. I know there's skateUK hockey skills to learn, but I can't get to notts until after 6pm at the earliest, plus I don't drive yet. Oh yeah... and I'd feel a twonk (an old one at that) if I showed up surrounded by 8 year olds who proceed to embarass me highly.

The 2nd session has Adults only at one side of the rink. I am totally enjoying it, I really look forward to my lesson!

What's the cost and minimum equipment?
Think I'm going to have to dust off the wallet.

This is just Skate UK which I reckon is a good place to start.
£37.50 and you just need skates.
Hockey is on a Wednesday night and is slightly more - check out the NIC website has info there!

You're never too old ... I started at 30! Okay, scratch that ... After spending 24 hours in agony after spraining a cruciate ligament during warm-up last night I'm starting to think that something a little less physical like knitting would be more suited to this particular thirty-something!

Who are the ice Tigers? When and where do they train? If you've got girlies on your team would you mind if I went on?
I need the extra practice at the mo. Standard wise, I play WPL.

Sheffield Ice Tigers train Wednesday nights for an hour starting around 2230-2245 at Ice Sheffield. A good bunch, a great laugh, and a good chance to develop for all levels. Rich'll give you more info ... he's the coach.
