is it me, or are these things putting me on a downer? I play roller and am a pretty solid skater, but when it comes to ice (never got round to getting hockey skates) I just cant skate like I should. People tell me I would be OK with a decent pair of skates but I think they're just saying that. please let me know your experiences of "hire skates" vs "hockey skates" or am I jus a rubbish skater?

No you are right. The hire skates were bad, hurt my feet and not sharp. Made it awful to skate it. A decent sized pair of sharpened skates (hockey or recreational) make all the difference.
Go for it, get some. Either new ones from the net or ebay. One of the best things I ever invested in.

Well there is obviously a difference between roller and ice however, the hire skates at the NIC have hardly any padding and generally aren't as good as you're own pair. With hire skates, they've had lots of people's different shaped feet in them, so have shaped to lots of shapes however with your own pair they would mould to your feet. You can get some ice hockey skates for about £40 which in the long run can often work out cheaper and provide more comfort so are definately worthwhile getting.

Put it this way... I can skate. I've then tried hired boots as a laugh... I'm like Bambi.
Please note I have my grade 10 and have been skating for 20 years, and I STILL cannot skate in hired skates. It provides entertainment tho!!
Tbh, I love getting new skates, especially when they put them in the oven!! When you get your new skates, if they don't do this, put them in your oven or microwave to heat them up.... nah just kidding!! Put a hairdryer in your skates before you wear them for the first time... this heats up the padding to make them easier to break in. Then wear them round the house (avoiding concrete - dulls the blades, and foam tiling like in the kitchen - this could cut it up!!!)
Hope this helps!!

Them hire skates are a death trap Ive been skating for about four years and played ice hockey for two years, and when i go on them hire skates, i cant even stand up on them. Get a decent pair of your own skates, you will notice a big difference.

Yup, new skates at the NIC! We've got some great comfy ones, quite padded and not really had any complaints about them (not like the old "billy blues") and we've just got some sort of hockey type skates! Only downer is that they only come in certain sizes (mainly adult size 8 and above) and the amount of these "new" skates are limited so they tend to be handed out as they're got to rather than when asked for! With hire skates you can either skate in them or you can't, and in my time at the rink I've only ever seen one "whizz" in billy blues and he was amazing, professional figure skating standards and yes I was gobsmacked, really couldn't believe that anyone could skate well in billies, especially not as well as he did!!!

It does seem like they've never been sharpened but I can assure you, with my hand on my heart they do get sharpened, they just don't seem like it when the lads have got to get from baby size 6 right up to adult size 14, it does take a while to get round the lot!
