Love them or hate them, we don't have a game without them. One of his earliest games was at Nottingham as a linesman. He's done very well to go as far as he has. Good luck to Tom for the future. Cant believe he was booed at the presentation, hope it was meant in a good natured way.

Last game he refs a 3-2 win for Steelers over Panthers, fitting.
On a serious note, whilst he does love himself he was one of the better refs in the league. Someone’s gotta step up, good luck to him.

Don't think Tom said it as it read (more duff spellings) but what he says is true. He has made his mark and I think the best times are when the refs get along with the players when being impartial.
22 Years is a long time and you can't say it was done on a whim.

Sorry to see him go. Incredibly difficult job with no thanks at all. Good luck Tom

No loss - he was paid to do a professional job and like a lot of them is sadly lacking in officiating to a high standard - when an official wishes to be the centre of attention, that official shouldn’t be doing the job.

Professional would suggest that refereeing was his full time job, which of course it wasn't.
I'd assume all EIHL officials do it for expenses, at best.

Always quite liked Darnell. His communication with the players when he was mic'd up was very good. It's a hard, hard job, everyone's a critic (frankly, I don't buy this "centre of attention" crap (OOAA)) but rarely does anyone step to put their money where their mouth is. I'd say at least 9 times out of 10 (note - subjective numbers here) any "controversy" over a call/non-call has been shown to be in the referee's favour. A lot of fans can't be bothered to make themselves even at least vaguely familiar with the rule book, but love to criticise officials. Good luck in whatever you do, Tom, thanks.

I wish I could skate, I wish I( could trust myself with the decisions I'd make. Not that I'd not be fair but when you get 5's and 10's and when penalties can start/end etc (minefield for scorers too) you'd need to on top of things. No time to show boat I'd guess. Though I'd love to travel to a game and get paid to do this job, it's not for everyone. I used to ref Gym hockey and even at this level the players were so 'at you' in a game you'd realise how intense it all would be. When you have one of the better refs like Darnell you should be more thankful than negative as these guys are harder to find. His high standard was at WORLD level.

Deserves credit and thanks for doing a VERY hard job for so long. But, actual required consistency level has always left a lot to be desired in my opinion. Just seems a little strange to quit mid-season but do not know his circumstances.
