Makes our progress a couple of seasons ago even more impressive considering. Do you think playing the two away games first helped us? Mountfield underestimated us in their barn and we took advantage of that, then we used home ice and the momentum to get the job done. Belfast and Cardiff haven’t had that advantage. They both desperately need to win on Saturday if they are going to progress because, as we all know, Lulea and Frolunda will be very, very tough. I think you make a valid point. However, we still had to preform at home after that shock factor had wore off

Gnats lost 6-1. Both teams still decently placed at the half way mark though. Belfast never really got going. The goal in the first minute didnt help, then they gave Mounfield the second goal and ended up chasing the game, which you can't do against quality opposition and a good goalie.

Very good 5-2 win for Cardiff... 5 goals on 19 shots, with Ben Bowns making 42 saves at the other end.

Given they've got a couple left against the Swedes, they needed that. Strangely long break between games now, don't play until October?

Yeah I think you're right. Makes it more difficult for Devils really, you'd have to expect Frolunda to be up to speed by then.

Cardiff need Graz to get a win vs Mountfield to progress IMO. Really tough ask to see them get anything from the Frolunda games.
Fantastic result for them tonight though!

Conceding that very late goal at home to Graz has made it very difficult for us. With 9 pts one win for Graz against Mountfield and we’d be through but with 8 pts it means we need a win or an o/t win at home against Forlunda. They’ve now begun to play well as their season begins so a shock result against them seems more unlikely now. I think if Graz win both against Mountfield in o/t we might scrape through lol

But I think you're right... Frolunda are going to be a very different - and difficult - proposition. Getting a win over them is going to be hard... although possibly not as hard as Graz beating Mountfield twice? Good luck to Cardiff...

I can see the scoreline being quite ugly at the frolundaberg arena I'm afraid

Mountfield winning in Austria at the moment (2 up with about 2 mins to play) is probably terminal for their chances of going through. You can't see Frolunda doing anything other than winning in regulation next week in Cardiff. I don't know if there was any permutation where Cardiff could've lost both of these games and still got through though.
Giants are going out tonight, 3 down to our old mates Lulea at home.

Giants out, but a decent effort to score 3 third period goals in a 6-3 defeat.

They could have progressed if they picked up a point and Mountfield didnt in their last 2 games as they lose the tiebreaker (aggregate score in the head-to-head). Now however they need to take take 2 points more than Mountfield do in their last game. A very tall order.

If Grazz hang on at home for a win, that would be nice. But I fear too late for Cardiff.

It is always going to be a tough ask, for any British team, to progress to the knockout stage when they’re drawn with another Swedish team. Ideally, you’d want to play them earlier in the campaign, when they’re not in full swing, to try and sneak a result. Belfast can hold their heads high and so can Cardiff, irrelevant of what happens in their final game.

I doubt what Panthers did in their last CHL campaign winning their group will ever be replicated again or in the near future, neither Cardiff or Giants have been near good enough this year I'm afraid

One positive is that the UK ranking will hopefully move to 8th. It's a good chunk away from 7th, but above France, Slovakia, Norway and Denmark.
Makes UK the 2nd best 'challenger league'.

Watching our matches I think that we found systems to play against them that restricted the number of scoring chances, got good goaltending, and didn't have to chase games.

For Cardiff to qualify:
Cardiff Reg or OT win, Mountfield lose in regulation.
If Mountfield lose in OT, Cardiff need a regulation win.
A Mountfield win of any kind sees them go through.

Devils win in regulation - go through instead of Frölunda Devils win in OT/SO - need Mountfield to lose in regulation Devils lose at all - OUT Long story short, Frölunda NEED to win the game to go through so I cant see us going through unfortunately.
