Quite interesting to hear that our refs have a new directive this year that I hadn’t heard about until last night.
The Steelers webcast was excellent as well.

As Jord has already said it’s quite obvious we’ve been outspent and it pains me to say it but Sheffield looked a better team than us last night.
This might sound daft but I don’t think going 3-0 up helped us, you could see from the first period how the refs were going to run the game, they weren’t letting anything go and it was inevitable Sheffield get another power play and score on it. As soon as they scored the momentum turned, their fans got louder, Simms wouldn’t stop squawking and we crumbled.
The game last night is done though and we’re forrunate it was a meaningless game. I’m hoping it can’t get any worse but we will have certainly learnt a lot about this team come the end of the day.
Just to add, we all need to be noisy today and get behind the team, I think a scrap from Lepine is desperately needed to get us all going.

How often do the fans get loud at the Motorpoint Library though? We have about 1000 fans in their retirement who just sit and clap along. The loudest I’ve ever heard that arena was when we won 2-0 in the CHL and that blew away anything I’d heard before, Lepine having a fight might get the boys going but they should already be fired up for being torn apart last night! Tonight’s about restoring some pride and having a consistent effort for 60 minutes. Even if we end up losing you still want to see your team battling for every inch of ice in that rink. As for us being lightweight and pushed around we already accepted that when the signings started coming in, who knows maybe something will change if that trend continues

Wow talking about changes and trends on the back of 1 game.. that's remarkable even for Panthers fans standards.
You learn more in defeat than victory.. not many on here have the intellect to realise that!!

Are they still advertising walk-up tickets? Went to this CC fixture five years ago to the weekend, and it was a sell-out with a week to go.

While it is true that you learn more in defeat than you do in victory that does not mean you are well served by losing all the time. - Garry Kasparov

Better players because they are on higher wages.. as long as Panthers are competitive Panthers will be competitive... For 4th place. We've been significantly outspent for the 2nd year running. Have Panthers refused to spend money or have the others simply thrown ridiculous amounts money around?

Have Panthers refused to spend money or have the others simply thrown ridiculous amounts money around? Depends what you call “ridiculous” money. You spend an extra £3k ish a week in the EIHL and you’ll get your six top imports on £1400 - £1500 a week instead of £900 - £1000 a week. That’s a much wider player pool your’e fishing into there if you’re spending the extra money. What’s £3k a week when a 6000 crowd gross’s you around £100k a week....it’s peanuts, pocket money even in the grand scheme of a whole season. All comes down to how much you want to win.

Sheffield have matched them this season.

Sheffield have matched them this season. So the obvious conclusion you can draw from that is that one of the “big four” isn’t that bothered about winning.

They choose not to match those budgets, they obviously want to win but not by breaking the clearly questionable structure.

An arms race builds up, which could lead to all sorts of issues. Are Panthers trying to play some version of Moneyball, bringing in less well CV'd, cheaper players but who have certain tools that Wallace thinks he can mould into something special? (Rather than just throw some money about and hope it buys you success. Let's face it if those 3 are looking to buy the league, at least 2 of them will see a poor return on investment at season's end.) Let's face it, KHL St Pierre was utterly invisible Sunday and Chad Rau didn't exactly spark his team into great things over the weekend, did he?

If it's an arms race then no way are Panthers going to get involved, bobness.
If we are being smart, bringing in the right coach & people around him then we can compete.... At what point does the perceived extra quality kick in would be the question.
We're moneyballing it to an extent... just having a lower budget but competing means we're trying get a better fit of players. It can work if the others have chucked money in a silly fashion & ruined any chance of chemistry. I'd say that Belfast & Cardiff are too smart for that & know what they're doing. They already have great structures in place so should get it right. Steelers have more potential to bust it.
I like our set up, I like the coach, I like the DOF but not the role as such. I'm not sure it's needed with the current coach in place but that's the system so fair enough.
The team look good & we seem to have a few gems in Herr, Qvist & Connelly. Will it be enough though I'm not so sure. Still think we're playing for 4th this season & then kick on more next season. But if the hockey is fast & entertaining then I imagine many previous regulars, myself included, will show up far more this season.

Exactly I've always said if you give 110% every shift the results take care of themselves. I'd put good money on some of these 'superstars' which have been mentioned being let downs come april (if they last that long!)
Love the last bbc interview with Doucet he made it clear he wasnt going to entertain anyone here who thought they were coming on holiday for a decent paycheck!
