I would say last years squad was pretty expensive and we had a very experienced coach at the helm. Is it possible that Black is not splashing the cash until Doucet and Wallace prove themselves, and/if that happens then the budget will start to increase That is quite plausible. I hope Wallace gets 3 years and be allowed to build something You said that about cherno and look how that turned out..

Hate to add fuel to the fire, as i'm very much waiting to see how this season pans out, but i'm also unsure as to where the Farmer/Lee wages have been spent also? They both would have been on a premium no doubt and we haven't replaced them. And the Clarke wages. Some of the juniors will have rightly had pay bumps, but not to the level of seniors we've lost in recent seasons. I agree that we have to see what happens, and nothing should be written off yet, but on the face of it we've got a cheap roster compared to the 3 teams who are our main competitors, by quite some distance.

To be fair, i'd assumed the Clarke wages will have gone towards retaining Perlini last year after his ppg the year before. This of course with no facts available, just pure speculation.

You said that about cherno and look how that turned out.. Yeah and I thought he should have been given longer initially. The Cherno thing would have gone on longer but it wasn’t as simple as that and I’m sure the full story will come out at some point. Basically if Cherno had stayed a number of players (Brits) were off straight away. Cherno was facing more problems in the locker room than he ever faced on the ice so arms were twisted and he was gone. The fallout with this resulted in several departures for this season. Cherno wasn’t interested in holiday camp NIC.

This squad looks young and fast, not much on the physical front.
It could be this is a long term project, following the way hockey is going now. Quick skilled skaters rather than strength..maybe we are getting ahead of the curve as this is what the league will look like in 3 years time.

The problem is, and I argue with Steeler's fans the same, is that the owners run it as a business, for themselves and not for you. And that is exactly the same as the majority, or even all, of you would do. I would!

Could the apparent budget cut be down to the new screen? I don't see why it should affect our signings but you can tell this roster is no where near as expensive as the 'top 3'

I don't see why it should affect our signings but you can tell this roster is no where near as expensive as the 'top 3' the budget would have been decided at the beginning of the off season and not based on the budgets of Steelers, Giants or Devils. Black is unlikely to know the budgets of those teams and what they are paying their players. Personally it would be unwise to start increasing Doucet’s budget halfway through the off-season based off of guesswork

Smith, I would also argue, is more of a fan than Blacky (annual protestations aside), and certainly more of a fan than the BBs with their 50%, who'd probably be most confused if you asked them about the Panthers, so you'd imagine his heart would, occasionally, win out over his head, and he'd put club success over bank balance.

I don't see why it should affect our signings but you can tell this roster is no where near as expensive as the 'top 3' The fans and other event goers paid for the scoreboard and new plexi with the 'facility fee'. I'd imagine the two cost more than expected with this seasons facility fee being increased. To me, we've fallen a way behind in budgetary terms due to last season having been a disaster and this season being a very fresh start with the introduction of a DoH and rookie coach, I don't particularly think Black will have made as much money available this season as was available last season as a result. Additionally, the budgets of teams around the league seem to have increased too. Steelers have had to increase, been too long for them without silverware and their season last season was embarrassing. They need to keep as many fans going as possible as if their attendances take a decrease then they're up a certain creek without a paddle. Giants are entering the CHL for the first time in their 20th anniversary season, also want to retain the league. Cardiff want to improve in Europe and don't want to lose out on the title this season like they did last season. Coventry, they've been sub-par or bang average for many years now. Need to spend a bit more and recruit better to keep their fans interested and attract more fans.

Especially when the fans paid a huge chunk of the cost and if the arena have done some sort of pay back deal with Black.

Let’s not knock the scoreboard - if the hockey’s crap we could maybe have cartoons or something to watch on it.

On the general subject I think they could be playing a dangerous game this season. If they end up well adrift of the title challengers early this year on top of last seasons effort they could lose even more fans than they already have.
Once people stop going religiously it’s difficult to get them back as many people find other things to do.

If we went and assembled an “expensive” roster and failed, that risk would still be there. I still don’t buy that we’ve been robbed with a cheap roster. I actually think this roster is one of the more exciting ones we’ve had for a while regardless of cost because there’s a game plan identified with 2 or 3 hockey people with EIHL experience leading the way

All about opinions. A lot of fans have been feeling mugged off for years and 4th seems to be the most common prediction for our league finish.
