Just how solid is the financial base upon which our top domestic league is built ?

Just how solid is the financial base upon which our top domestic league is built ? I very much doubt that you will get an answer with any solid facts to back it up... Personal opinion? - not very solid at all. I can't see how a league as badly run as the EIHL could be all that secure, especially if - as is widely believed - it relies upon the income from one event to stay afloat... the Play-Off Finals weekend.

You'd need all the club's accounts, all the clubs' structures, all the clubs' agreements and a detailed financial look at the league as a whole. Never gonna happen.
So what if it does rely on the finals weekend for a large slice of income? If it works (and the EIHL is 16 years old now, so can't be doing it that badly...) is that so much of an issue?

Does the league not also run a franchise system which I would assume would involve franchise fees from each club too?
I'd be surprised if it was anything significant but perhaps some income there too.

The league is only as stable as the weakest teams. If you have no one to play against it all comes apart like a cheap watch anyway.
Not quite sure how popular uk ice hockey is with the paying public. That would really be the key.

And if anyone thinks this is isolated or that ice hockey is a growing sport over here in the uk you’re deluded. It’s either clinging to survival, a hobby for a rich man or a desperate money grab.

Teams that operate like this should be nowhere near the elite league. Glad teams like MK and Edinburgh packed it up as they weaken the league. Numbers aren't the most important thing. Much rather have 10 competitive and viable teams than have hangers on put in to prop everyone else up

Seen quite a few stories like this over the years. Sometimes even from the "bigger clubs" too. To be honest i'm suprised we dont here a lot more of it. I often wonder if some clubs have it written into contracts to prevent players talking. You here so many stories and rumours but not actually that often from the players themselves.

Much rather have 10 competitive and viable teams than have hangers on put in to prop everyone else up I would suggest there are more clubs than Edinburgh and Milton Keynes living hand to mouth. British hockey has always been the same, it has zero creditbility within the wider sporting community. The way the EIHL is run, directly by club owners with no overall, impartial governance means self interest is the overriding concern. It is telling that all children's sport in Britain is run much more competently than ice hockey, a supposed professional sport. When fans complain about a lack of coverage in the press and mainstream media they should be aiming their ire at the clubs owners.

Why I clubs so obsessed on attendance figures etc if it was well sustained! It's a poorly ran league as Ex MK player Lannon testfiys it's just that hes spoke out and others have over the years It's a great mystery how this league has kept afloat for 16 years it really has!

The EIHL is like a badly owned football club.. it's always 2 days from going tits up! That day will come I'm sure you'll be happy on that day. Not until, I'm sure. It is indeed a wild assertion with no basis at all in anything approaching verifiable fact, as far as I can tell. It's a bit like the Steve Lee thing. You can't just say something and it be true, no matter how many times you say it. Meanwhile, back on this planet, what's the company the EIHL runs through called, anyone know? Or is it not a company at all now?

I have no doubt many clubs are running a very fine line between the black and red on a regular basis...but then again I bet most football clubs are as well. If we only allowed purely profitable clubs in the league it would probably be a very small league.

If we only allowed purely profitable clubs in the league it would probably be a very small league. Football has TV money, sponsorship as well as gate receipts. UK ice hockey (apart from a couple of teams) it’s purely bums on seats money and without the teams with big travelling fans a couple of times a year there are several in very precarious positions. They depend upon interest and gate growth. If the league allows in non profitable teams (without a rich backer to guarantee them) who is going to support them financially for the season?

Depends if you want a four team league in the medium term. Some form of revenue sharing is practiced (I believe) and is essential at this stage. It'd be nice if all the clubs were self-sustaining, but that doesn't seem to be the case just now. An idea may be a league wide Commercial Director?

Which is one reason why I believed I was watching a false sham league. My club financially supports another club, who then beats my club, because the other club wants it more. Nah it’s a pantomime !

An idea may be a league wide Commercial Director? EIHL are "very close" to making an appointment for the post. That update might sound promising, but unfortunately, it's from 4 years ago! Absolutely nothing further since, not even to say they're not going ahead with the post anymore.
