Panthers are in desperate need of a captain. Lepine is simply not a true leader. Nor were Lee , Brad Moran or Clarke before him. The team is urgently crying out for true leader whether it be the type who leaders by example or 'calls out' the others. When the going gets tough we have nobody that the side can look to for inspiration. Nobody to set an example. Nobody capable of leading from the front. In short, we do not have a captain.

It certainly seems that way because Lepine has been a major disappointment. The only one who looks like he could be captain material to me is Bolduc.

Captains lead by example and bust a gut around the ice, Bolduc never breaks sweat! He's so uncaptain like! To me the closest to a captain we have is Pither !

He’s been a multi year captain in the AHL and an A in the KHL and the DEL. I’ve always been of the opinion that if you make a player captain he has to lead by example so if you make a big player captain he has to show up and hopefully the rest will follow Unfortunately Panthers always seem to go with “Captain nicey nicey” like Clarkey and Lee etc and that’s probably why we get a “nicey nicey” team. I thought Lepine would be a decent captain but he seems to have come back a totally different and ineffective player. Bolduc may need a kick up the pants yes,but come play off time he’s the sort of guy who is likely going to switch on. Make him captain and he might switch on earlier.

Moran was a captain in the AHL before he came to us and what effect did he have?
Captains need to be ones who will run/skate through walls for the team or just generally be a good leader.
It's no coincidence we were successful when Fox was captain!!
Same when Pearce was Forest captain.. and way before that John Mcgovern. Brilliant leaders and vocal.
Lepine hasn't got those qualities I think part of enticing him back was the promise of making him captain personally

Yeah and look what candidates we’ve got....
Rheault....he’s never on the ice. Henderson....where’s he gone. Olsen....huge guy plays like a wet fart. Pither....Mr nice guy Tvrdon....Err nope Guptill....talented but lazy Hurtubise.....hasn’t turned up yet Kovacs....a bit invisible Lepine....on his holidays Rissling....can’t see it Richard....no chance
That leaves Bolduc,Billingsley and Hughes.
Not a lot of choice really is there. 🤨

Changing captain mid season is a non starter and woiod never happen. We going the season with what we have and get the most of what we have and work harder like I keep saying every week . Work hard and results follow

You place far too much emphasis on cv’s rather than what is actually going on at the club You've got to make some acknowledgement to their CV though. Clearly coaches and players in the AHL, KHL and DEL found Bolduc to be a good leader and I don't think it's a ludicrous thing to say that people he played with and was coached by at those times are better qualified than what's on offer here in Nottingham. Bolduc comes across like a guy who will fight hard for something, if you give him something to fight for... what are we fighting for at the moment? Little to nothing. I'm not going to say Lepine shouldn't be captain as I like everyone else on here have no clue what he's like in the locker room, off the ice with the guys etc. the thing with Lepine, if he plays his game the way he did in his first stint with us he'd be 10x better and probably look a better captain, but since he's significantly withdrawn from being the physical presence he was, he appears to be a coaster. At the end of the day, this is the first season the players have had no say in who's captain but I doubt many, if any objected to Lepine being given the C. Every season before this it was players vote.

But that was based on what we knew of the old Lepine, but unfortunately he seems to have somehow turned into a coasting, mistake ridden shrinking violet. 🤨

I thought he was going to be too quality when he arrived going by his cv but to me he’s seemed bang average and you’d never of thought he was not far off a ppg player for a in the AHL only a few years ago

Panthers are beset by problems, the captaincy is only one of them. I too thought Lepine was a good choice for the position but who could foresee the disappointment he has been this season?

Is being Captain part of the reason that Gui isnt the hard hitting, fighting d-man he was in his first spells ? The captain needs to talk to the refs, and should set an example to the team on the ice. Gui can't do that if he's in the box or been chucked out. Fox was a good captain because he didnt take silly penalties and could liaise with the officials. Very few others in our current squad, except the Brits, can do that, so Gui might as well be captain. Its not a massive responsibility anyway.

Its not a massive responsibility anyway. Probably the most intelligent thing anyone has yet said on this thread, apart from possibly the last sentence. Gui Lepine has definitely been a disappointment so far this season. Gone is the wrecking-ball style which endeared him to the fans (plus the odd fisticuffs incident)... he seems a shadow of his former self. Why? - it's all guesswork. Maybe he's coasting? Maybe the C has caused him to calm things down, as ashfieldpanther suggests, maybe all sorts of things - probably none of which we have even a chance of truly finding out. I defy anyone to come out with anything more than guesswork... As for the position of captain itself, the problem is... 90% or more of what a captain does, we the fans neither see nor hear. A lot of it is on the bench - which most of us can't see or hear - and a lot more of it is off the ice, in the dressing room, in training etc... which none of us see or hear. Actual 'visible' leadership (however that may be defined) out on the ice while the game is in progress... that's only a tiny part of it. And then you have the oft-touted 'leading by example'... which sounds great in theory, but is often total testicles in practice. How does a stay-at-home D-man lead a scoring winger 'by example'? How does a power forward lead a defensively-orientated centre 'by example'? Who the hell is going to lead a netminder 'by example', for crying out loud? It's all very well saying that a captain should be a human dynamo with stratospheric energy levels and should inspire his teammates that way... the problem is, such players are very thin on the ground at the best of times, and that's also not as likely to work on the cool-headed types (who may appear to be less active, but actually contribute just as much as the more spectacular 'rush around like a mad thing' players, if not more). I've always thought that we should look beyond the headline players when looking for a captain, anyway. So often we've heard that this or that player should be captain because they score lots, or 'stand up for their team' or whatever... but being a captain is a leadership function, and that's a real intangible which comes in many forms. A constantly-shouting guy may look like a good leader... but if he overdoes it, he risks his team-mates starting to ignore his shouting. Sometimes a good lead can be a calm, quiet(-ish) type.

Bit of eliteism from you there old boy criticising all the previous posts but not offering anything much or concrete yourself, other than either telling us what we already know or repeating what’s been said already. Your guessing too,we all are,but all we can see is what’s on the ice so that’s what we base our thoughts on. It could be argued that what we’re seeing on the ice is the true picture because it’s not going great is it and even Adey said on tv that he felt Panthers lacked leadership.

Have to agree here, that whilst we are all coming up with various theories and opinions, none of us appear to have the answer, but Adey is spot on when he said we are lacking leadership; in fact it is not just lacking it’s totally none existent. The lack of passion shown by the players is disgusting in my opinion.
