Is it the mere fact that we have the largest fanbase in the league which makes us, according to the Panthers management, the best fans in the league? Why are we the best fans in the league?
I can agree with that sentiment as far as the travelling fans are concerned as they always do us proud as they follow the team around the country, and can often be heard on webcasts etc. But at home? Quite honestly you could sometimes hear a mouse cough at some of our home games, and there never seems to be any encouragement when the team actually need it - when they’re behind.
As far as I can see after doing a bit of Googling, Panthers are the only team in the Elite League not to have some form of supporters club or fan council. Are the Panthers fans so apathetic that they can’t be bothered to run one? This from the best supporters in the league?
After their recent AGM it seems almost certain that the supporters trust will be wound up. The interim board are to be applauded in keeping the trust going for over a year in the face of total apathy from “the best fans in the league” and the active hostility of the club. It seems now that the club have, with the demise of our old supporters club and the campaign against the Trust, totally emasculated the fanbase. We have no say whatsoever in our club, we are merely customers.
Actually, I have answered my own question. Why are we the best supporters in the league? Because we are totally passive, we have no say, we have no input, we just keep providing the cash.
Best supporters in the league? Don’t make me laugh - GM and NB are doing that for me.

Love Panther fans, but they couldn’t hold a candle to the Devils fans, now they are something else.

Love Panther fans, but they couldn’t hold a candle to the Devils fans, now they are something else. Devil's fans are certainly something else... They showed that in the CHL when they stayed home... Certainly not loyal to the team then... Each club will always claim their fans are the best in the league... Why would they not. They want your money...

I said the best, not the richest. Don’t take the mick out of the poor, with the 4th highest budget in the league.

Each club will always claim their fans are the best in the league... Yeah, other than when the accommodation manager makes a podcast, it would seem rather self defeating to call your own fans anything else really. Not really sure what the point of this thread is? Tell us all off for doing it wrong?

No one mentioned fans being poor Only you did that... You never know... Next time you assume something you may actually be correct. Then again it may snow soon...

Everyone knows the Edinburgh poor fans were the best anyway. For putting up with all those cellar years.

If this were just a numbers game then we'd wipe the floor with everybody in this country. Can't kid ourselves though, if you look around the arena on a Saturday you'd have to say around 20-30% of the crowd are the casual night out brigade .
I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. As a result that means our club is more than financially stable but that's a whole different subject and don't want to hijack the thread on that.
If you're going on passion and noise then there are probably a few clubs who beat us without question. Despite their growing arrogance you have to say Cardiff are one of those . They were loud in the BBT and aren't that far off it now they are successful.
I'm happy to say though that we are still lightyears ahead of Sheffield. Been going to the tin shed for over 10 years and can't say I've ever heard that place bounce. Boxing day last year they should have been lapping that up buy it was was dead as our rivalry .

Almost like they have battered most fans into submission over the years now nobody wants to the hassle to get something going. The club wants us as viewers to a play rather than actual participation

They were loud in the BBT and aren't that far off it now they are successful. In terms of passion and noise I’d agree that as a collection Devils are probably the loudest but you have to look at the demographic of their fanbase and ours. As you say, we have a lot of casual fans, they don’t make noise. We have a lot of older fans who won’t make noise. We have fans who have been going for years who, for some reason, won’t make any noise. If you look at Cardiff they’ve got a younger fanbase, there are nowhere near as many casuals and after their recent success they will have a lot of new fans who are excited and in turn will be more lively. In the MK - Glasgow game on free sports the other week Matt Haywood was interviewed during the intermission and he mentioned the MK fans and how they make the building intimidating and a tough place to play. That’s says it all doesn’t it? The club are doing nothing to help make the NIC a tough place to play but neither are the majority of our fans...

Hate to say it but from a noise point of view, when the Steelers away fans get going they are loud. Couple of years ago in that really long play off final against Cardiff you could argue the Steelers fans pushed their team to that win, they were incredible that day.

Loudest I've heard this season were MK without a doubt, the place was rocking last week but the smaller arena helps with the noise to. id say Fife were pretty loud but after this years visit the atmosphere there is changing, its getting very nasty and uneasy its totally spoilt the visit there going forward.
Mardibum I can only assume from your post that you are fairly new to the Panthers? There was a Supporters Club, this was disbanded several years ago and I would imagine as long as NB and GM are at this club there will not be another one.

On a separate note, Paws is the "greatest" mascot in the Elite league? That's a weird choice of word for me. How does one define mascot greatness, and have all the league mascots been objectively assessed against the criteria? Or is it just some club spiel?

It's interesting casual fans are being mentioned. I have often found games where the arena is half empty but full of 'hockey fans' the atmosphere is so much better and louder.
Casual fans are great for the attendance figures and money but don't add much in the way of atmosphere most of the time

Casual fans are great for the attendance figures and money but don't add much in the way of atmosphere most of the time Yep the CHL games proved that. The atmosphere in the wins against the big European boys were some of the best I can think of at the NIC but the crowds wern’t huge.

The club don't want fan participation less its on their terms. The recently evolved Fans Trust is thus something that they severely held at arms length. Previous supporters club come Booster club was the start of a club run enterprise. So less its club run its a no no. Supporters , at best, should just run their own interests and bugger what the club think.

I'm assuming it was because there was a twitter poll competition a week or so ago to decide the leagues favourite mascot, which Paws won.
Clangus was robbed if you ask me...

Sorry, I think I was being a bit too obtuse. I do indeed remember the old supporters club, EMB, having been watching the Panthers for 28 years, but I was trying to highlight the fact that due to the attitude of the management we now have no fan involvement whatsoever - a situation that exists nowhere else in the league.
I didn’t mean my post to be a platform to discuss who ARE the best fans in the league, I was trying to be a bit sarcastic (I know, the lowest form of wit) to demonstrate that whereas every other club has dedicated fans who WILL run a supporters club, we don’t. We have as much involvement with the hockey experience as going to see a film and unfortunately most of the fans (dare I say it, casual fans) seem quite happy with that. I’m not. I often say that sport is a substitute for war. Our team versus their team. Note “our” team. The Panthers are no longer “our” team. It’s just Neil Black’s team who we can pay to go and see every week. Norhing is required but our money.
So what if the management don’t want fan involvement? With a bit of solidarity that shouldn’t matter. Potentially we have the numbers to make our opinions known. What we don’t have is the committment, as the lack of support for the Trust demonstrated.
We ARE the best fans in the league as far as Black and Moran go because we are so passive. Sadly, we get what we deserve.

Hands down MK have the best support, that place is electric and soooo loud, all the more incredible when you consider where they are in the league. That building is electric and remember last season when they came here, one block made far more noise that the rest of our arena.

Basically from an owners point of view the Panthers fans are a dream for handing over money and being extremely loyal despite what ever happens on the ice. From a vocal support point of view though at the NIC i think you could say the majority of the time the Panthers fans are extremely poor indeed. Away from home, the Panthers fans are pretty good.
I recall Mike Oconnor wishing he had the Panthers fans any day rather than his Steelers. Mike Blaisdell when Panthers coach referring to the Panthers fans as the worst fans in the whole ******* league. And as for GM well I’d better not say what he called the Panthers fans.
All round i reckon the best fans have to be the Devils. They saved their club several years ago, wouldn’t give up when things were going really bad in Cardiff and they’re noisy too.

Panthers fans would turn out to watch their team play a collection of dustbins. That does not make them the best though. In terms of actual vocal support they can be good on the road. At the NIC they are generally very quiet.
