I played in the BUIHA for 3 years through my university studies. The BUIHA is broken down into divisions (North, South) and different leagues. League 1, League 2, League 3.
League 1 and 2 are full checking/contact hockey, where as league 3 is non checking.
League 1 is a pretty good standard of hockey, Some universities have import players studying who are eligible to play (we were lucky enough to have 3 czech players for one of the seasons.
League 2 again is contact hockey but is more intermediate.
League 3 is full non contact more for beginners.
Most universities have multiple teams i.e A, B, C
The A team play in in league 1, B team league 2 etc....
Hope that gives you a bit of an insight

As someone who helps the Mavericks in the BUIHA I can say its a good league. There are teams all over the Country with some teams having quite a large catchment area for players to play within.
Which is your local team? The Mavs are a friendly bunch that could do with some support at home games.
