I assume Basketball is also helped on some level by the fact we have a British player in Luol Deng (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luol_Deng) playing in the NBA for the Miami Heat, that has to carry a little bit of stroke you would have thought?

To get money from the government for a sport you have to jump through a lot of hoops. It is generally to do with accessibility, development, transparency, safety and education. I presume the elite league, can't, won't or don't need to? Ice hockey does get funding but at grass roots level only.
Forget UK basket ball, why is netball on sky and hockey not?

I'd guess Premier sports offered more money. Premier Sports will NEVER attract many new fans as it's a very niche channel. On sky at least people could accidentally switch on and see it. If they are seeious about growing the sport, making it viewable to the maximum number of people would be a good start!

Perhaps the netball association is paying Sky to show it. Used to happen with the ice hockey.

Big part of it TV deals is heavy marketing, until the EIHL gets the likes of a Barry Hearn in who has successfully sold 7 figure and prime time TV deals for the likes of Premier League Darts, Snooker, and 6 hour long sessions of fishing to Sky Sports. (Yes you read that right, fishing!) Someone like that is required to market the league out to tender, if that doesn’t happen then I can’t see anything too dramatic either happening or changing any time soon.
A lot is possible to do, but it requires joined-up thinking, coordination and pooling of resources.
One very interesting caveat of the Red Hockey investments in the EPL, is they now own Telford in the Midlands, part-own Bracknell in the south, and Manchester in the north. Jointly selling those 3 in a group to big nationwide sized sponsors is a far easier sell than just the one club trying to.

I'm a football fan primarily who found ice hockey with Panthers and Basketball with Leicester Riders
Both family sports for watching and great fun to watch IMO
I think Riders and Panthers could actually learn things from each other in how to put on a great night out for spectators
We moved from Notts to Leics so we go to basketball far more than ice hockey now as a family
For me I realise that it wasn't to everybody's taste etc and in the end it didn't work but most fun and exciting time watching was when Alex Penner was doing crazy stuff
I guess that's not ice hockey for purists though
Best part of basketball is accessibility of the players to the fans after the match on court and the huge amount of visits the players do to local schools as part of their job and bringing kids into playing the sport
Ice hockey can't really replicate that of course as it's not an easy sport for kids to get involved in

Just as a comment on the netball on sky. Coming from Loughborough we hear things and people who worked at the university where loughborough lightening play told us that when sky were first showing games the university were paying sky a few thousand a game to show it. This was a few years ago and i can't now remember the exact figure either £2000 or £4000. I have no idea if the same deal is ongoing but this is certainly how the netball league and teams got sky involved in the first place it would appear. They looked at it as an investment into the sport.
