Apparently Tony Smith has confirmed that the next team to join the league will be a London Franchise and if they cant get a 12th that they will scrap the conference system. Great news on both counts!!

Fantastic news and the league takes another step forwards. Let's hope they can afford a video camera...

More teams can only be good for the league and a new team playing in London, probably out of Wembley , is even better.

Fingers crossed it will be a big step forwards especially if another team joins as well.

Anyone with anything but the emptiest glass in the World of empty glasses should believe this is a step forward for UK hockey.

Anyone with anything but the emptiest glass in the World of empty glasses should believe this is a step forward for UK hockey. Ok, i have emptied my glass just to makes sure anything left has drained out of it!! Why has this got to be a step forward? Whilst i admit a London team may get UK hockey a little more media exposure who do you think is going to go and watch it? Do you actually live in or around London? Getting to Wembley is a pig awful journey!! In fact from where i live admittedly "south of the river" it'll take me the best part of 1hr 30 minutes to drive and that is assuming the M25 is running OK - yeah right!! - It'll be quicker for you to drive from Nottingham than it will be for me especially on a week day!! There is a reason that the O2 is the most successful arena in London - it is because it is (at least for London!!) easy to get to with decent public transport - this is not the same for Wembley. People will make the effort for an odd occasion like a concert or a one off game at Wembley stadium but not regularly, not in the sort of numbers you are going to need to make it work. For those with short memories i will remind you of the London Knights!! Never got enough people to fill that building and that is why they folded - it was just handy that the arena was to be demolished!! And the travel links to Docklands were at that time similar to that which face Wembley now There is just too much going on down here for people and anyway the buses and trains all grind to a halt on the merest mention of ice!! And what about the additional costs for the smaller clubs who are predominately in the North? Or are we ditching them after next weeks referendum??!! Without the conference system they are going to have fewer local derbies and higher travel costs - how can that be good for UK hockey? Don't get me wrong, i'll be delighted to have a London team but i'm of the same opinion that we are going to be subsidising this venture for many a year to come both in terms of the London team itself and the other teams in the league already.

Great news on both counts!! I'm happy with the 11 then. But this is hockey and the travel for the Northern teams will be an extra expence....yet, we managed all this ok in the 80's so I tend to revert back to thinking what's the fuss........swings and roundabouts.

I was very happy with the chl and when they upped the import limit.
I don't see how a London team will be sustainable unless it's outside London and just down south.
Unless they have found a billionaire owner? Where will they play? Where will the players live?
Some of the poorer teams will struggle with the travel costs, he'll some teams will struggle to afford to pay for parking the team coach.
I'll believe it when it see it.

I think Neil Black might possibly have done some research into the viability of running a team from where ever they are going to play out of. He seems to have made a pretty good job of the two ventures he has had anything to do with up until now.

I seem to remember a lot of people said that the Glasgow franchise wouldn't work, the Clan do appear to be doing OK now.

Id say the Clan are doing very well indeed right now, an opening night attendance of 3500, keep that up and theyll not only be profitable i would have thought, but also a driving force within the league in the next couple of years

There is an EIHL board meeting at Nottingham today - could be interesting to see what comes out of it Would be great to have a team out of London back in the EIHL providing the sustainability is long term There now needs to be a 12th team as somebody already mentioned. A lot of the EPL teams don't want to step up as the financial constraints are too big or you have to deal with the owners ego (Neil Morris at Manchester Phoenix)which is bigger than the clubs

I don't think the league needs a London side in a hurry. That's not to say we don't need a London side but one put in on their own? Who would be their nearest rivals? Cardiff? Coventry? It's completely unfeasible that a London side can succeed without a little bit of local competition. We don't so much need a London side as we need an entire southern hockey revolution. I seem to remember a lot of people said that the Glasgow franchise wouldn't work, the Clan do appear to be doing OK now. It works because of the locality of Fife, Dundee, Edinburgh and the new facilities. London sadly can't boast any of those things.

Geographically, and logistically, a London team would suit the EPL more than the EIHL - rivalries with Basingstoke, Guildford, Bracknell are much easier to create than Nottingham, Coventry and Sheffield, I guess - and the EPL is currently a 9 team league, so a 10th team would fit better. But a London team would be much more suited to the EIHL, in terms of city size etc. It would be nice to see a London team and An Other team introduced into the EIHL. A 12th team could also include Telford, who have made noises recently about moving up to the EIHL - and a southern based team could maybe (unlikely, but you never know) encourage Guildford to move up as well. Interesting times.

I don't know where initial poster got info. London was NOT categorically mentioned just 2 Southern Teams 1 of which was rejected, people just assumed London but as someone said there is so much going on already down there.

Would Telford not be an ideal team to join the EIHL?

We already know NB is looking to creating a team in London. That's old news.

Erm not quite sure where you are getting your info from but Wembley is one of the easiest places to get to by public transport. There are 3 train stations in wembley and they are on numerous lines. Its actually a massive advantage of playing in wembley, incomparable to the Docklands Many thanks for asking - from 25 years of living, working, commuting and generally trying to travel in and around London on a daily basis!! Nothing like experience over looking on the internet!! (see two can play at the sarcastic comments game &/or make sweeping assumptions without knowing sufficient background about the poster!!) Whilst there are several tube and rail stations do not confuse ease with being well served!! You are not going to get significant numbers of people traveling cross London regularly (be it by public transport or by car, it just takes too long!!! Every home game will be like an away game) to allow a franchise to flourish without significant long term subsidy be that from NB's pocket directly or from a levy across the league. You also need to remember that London doesn't identify with teams that are called London - it is very parochial place comprised of many different districts and areas that each have their own pull and attraction, like Nottingham, Derby and Leicester all being pulled together - tell me honestly whether you would expect huge support for East Midland Panthers playing out of an arena in Loughborough? For that is essentially what a London team playing in Wembley would be like. I reassert that whilst a London team may be good for media profile, it is not going to be overly helpful to the stability of the league unless we completely change and become a southern centric league and dump the Scots

You can get to Wembley on the Bakerloo, Jubliee and Metropolitan line. As someone who has gone to Wembley numerous times, it couldn't be a more accessible area. In terms of the naming of the team, well nothing has been confirmed but seeing as Neil Black lives in London, you would think he has a good idea of what will work

Wembely is a nightmare to get to and from. I imaging it will be a little easier with only 100 people leaving the area as apposed to 100,000.
Change the title to "southern" team which would be a lot more realistic but also old news as has been said.
