Philadelphia Flyers forward Eric Wellwood has confirmed his retirement - and has begun his career of a coach as assistant manager of the Oshawa Generals today following an absolutely horrific injury a while back:

Such a shame, what a great talent and real nice guy to boot, spent his time while rehabbing helping out in his former OHL team coaching.
For those that can't check out the article, Wellwood was in an awkward collision, where he stood on his own ankle/foot that left him pouring blood from every gap in his skate (quite literally). The injury/incident has been described as the worst the sport has seen of its nature.
Get well soon Eric.
And for all the brave among us, here's a photo of his skate following the incident. (discretion is advised...)
OUCH.
