Don't underestimate the power of DS in Smith's ear. Spend, spend, has always been the mantra when he's held sway. Dunno if it's DS The BS or not, but the spending up the M1 has always been an issue - as bankruptcies in the past and Tony Smith's admission that they were the highest spenders last season would attest. With that in mind, I wouldn't bet against them going OTT again with chucking out wads of cash. After all, they've not stopped drivelling on and on and on about how much more they're raking in from the 50/50, their supposed increased attendance, blah blah blah. With all of that, plus their eternal obsession with on-ice success at all costs, anyone want to bet against the Steelers just throwing money at the problem?

They need a tight defence and a consistent netminder, nether of which they had last year

With all of that, plus their eternal obsession with on-ice success at all costs, anyone want to bet against the Steelers just throwing money at the problem? For the umpteenth time, Tony Smith never actually stated we spent the most, this is the article that everybody keeps making reference too. www.thestar.co.uk/sport/ice-hockey/video-heads-may-roll-if-club-ends-up-empty-handed-1-5504017Firstly, it's not even a direct quote from Tony Smith. Secondly, it uses the word 'believes'.....Meaning he doesn't actually know. Thirdly, it states assembled. Now I take that to mean the squad put together at the start of the season. During the season we probably downgraded our spending with the release of Pecker, Shields and Wood, whereas other teams upgraded (Lepine) and added additional imports. Looking at our players and the depth of our squad compared to others, I'd be very surprised if we were the top spenders overall. If we have signed Nell for next season I'm quite pleased, because he looks a decent player, but he has no previous record of success at this sort of level so I doubt he'll be on a top wage. The likes of Dowd and Farmer would be top wage earners, but if either of those two come to Sheffield it's probably to replace other top earning Brits like Tait and Shields. Regards Doom

Doom, you can analyse the wording of that article all you want... who knows, you might even be right (equally, you might not...). Doesn't make the slightest bit of difference. None of us truly know what any team has spent... it's all supposition and propaganda. Which hasn't stopped the incessant whispering campaign spearheaded by the Steelers, their fans and their gobby PR mouthpiece from successfully convincing the whole of British ice hockey that the Panthers are Britain's Top Spenders TM. What goes around comes around. Your lot decided to have a propaganda war, and nobody in the Steelers camp has cared enough to try to stop it. Fine - if that's the way it is, that's the way it is. Which means you lot have to suffer the consequences of your PR allies (in this case The Star) saying something that might be seized upon. Biter bit and all that. Funny that neither DS nor TS have publicly corrected it though, isn't it? You'd have thought that if it wasn't true, two of the biggest gobs in British ice hockey would have said something...
And it's not as if Sheffield don't have form for overspending and lying about it. Grand Sham anyone? Denied vehemently for years that they went over the wage cap, then 'well yes, we did - but so did everyone else, so that's OK then'.
Face it, Doom... it may not be through any personal fault of your own, but you simply don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to this subject.

Shaggy, I was simply correcting you on something that you and others keep stating as fact (ie. Tony Smith's admission that we spent the most). It's not fact and he never actually said that. Whichever team did spend the most doesn't really matter anyway, because it's not against the rules. I'm not sure the relevance of all the other stuff you've written, because that has nothing to do with Tony Smith. Regards Doom

I believe he said it when he came out with his other stupid 'motivational' comments. So it can be taken as fact. I do not think anyone is saying its against the rules, I want teams to spend as much as they possibly can. The problem is that Sheffield have a track record of spending way more than they possibly on numerous occasions in their short history and going bust. That track record also included the same day to day management team of Mike O'Conner(sp?), Dave Simms having his say and the other same backroom staff. Tony Smith is almost certainly bankrolling you at the minute as I doubt very much Steelers are breaking even let alone making a profit. I can see why his is doing it though, as he is trying to make everything seem rosy to potential suppliers and sponsors looking in. Trouble is anyone can only do this for so long as pretty much all the other owners of the Steelers have found out. Looking in I can't see anything that has changed at steelers other than your spending more each season.

Tony is not bank rolling the club this year. As stated at various fans and ST holders forums, the club is financially self sufficient and has been all this year. More money will be available next year as one-offs (Scoreboard etc) will not be required. These were all payed by the club, not Tony.
All this information is from Tony himself BTW before you ask who said what to whom.

All of which I would say whether or not it was true if I had taken over a club in Steelers position.
The biggest thing steelers have to contend with going forward is their past and Tony Smith would be smart in trying to hide that as much as possible.

I wondered about this when Tommo signed in Europe, how many players he would poach. After all his enthusing over Jordan on the sky footage of his goal I'm not surprised if true. I see a tweet from Jordan also asking a Panthers fan where he got the info from on a rumour that he was going to Sweden.

Re Jordan Fox, in an earlier tweet he sent to Sean Muncy he also put " You sign in my league and don't even tell me?" Wouldn't be 'his' league if he was off to Sweden would it?

Not so much a rumour but Nell confirmed as signing in Sheffield after a PR blunder in Swindon had them release the news earlier than Steelers would have liked.
May this be the year of brits actually moving up to the EIHL?

They drip the signings in steadily rather than all in one go. Try to generate as much publicity as possible as well as all the cloak and dagger stuff. Usually they've been signed for weeks before being announced.
