Of the managers you mention that you'd rather have, how many have succesfully got a team promoted from this division? One? Malky Mackay who is a good manager and did a great job at Cardiff albeit with a bit of backing from his chairman. He's worthy of another job in the top flight IMO. Swansea maybe? Laudrup and RDM are way beyond 'slightly unlikely' Dan. Howe has done a good job at Bournemouth (twice) but is not likely to move 'Up North' again after he walked out on Burnley to go back down south for family reasons. Not sure which Clarke you're referring too - if it's Lee then no thanks. Did a good job at Huddersfield (in League One) but distinctly average otherwise.
How do you know he's a purely motivational manager? I've heard from various players that his attention to detail is second to none and he leaves no stone unturned in pursuit of results. He is obviously very motivational and that's one of his major strengths, it was also one of Brian Clough's and Alex Ferguson's major strengths and they did kind of ok. Davies has admitted that he made mistakes during his short stint in the PL with Derby so it's fair to say he won't be so naive as to make the same mistakes again.
Last season he took over with the club at a very low ebb. Not many fans took his short time as a failure; we'd all but given up on making the play-offs so to get as close as we did was testament to BD. Would you have thought any different if the bad run had come first and the 6-7 wins in a row followed that? Even if we still would've missed out on the play-offs?
He may have inherited a squad worth £10m but inherited is the key word - it was somebody elses (Cotterill/O'Driscoll/McLeish) squad so of course he's going to want to change it. He said right from the start that he could see what changes needed to be made - the squad was one dimensional, it had no pace, no width and was short of quality central defenders. He's addressed that and who can complain at the additions of the likes of Wilson, Hobbs and Paterson? He's also helped to nurture the potential of Lascelles and turn him into one of the best central defenders in the division.
First things first - he's been brought in to get us out of this division. We've been out of the top flight for 14 seasons and apart from one season under Paul Hart, nobody has even come close to getting us there apart from Davies. He's the best man for the job right now and if he gets us up then job done. If he gets found out (as you think he will) in the PL then no doubt, tough decisions will need to be made. Lets worry about that when/if it happens though.
