Announced on British Ice Hockey this afternoon that the EIHL are considering allowing 11 imports per team after the loss of several key British players. Can only be a good thing in my eyes, im all for increasing the quality of home grown Brits but if this happens im sure it would increase the quality of the on-ice product.

The EIHL board meeting had something that the Blacks didn't agree with. Could it be 11 imports ? Obviously we would like 11 imports for quality but they might have been thinking about the lower end teams. Just a possibility.

Probably just Giants and Devils moaning because theyve lost a key player and any brit capable of making up the numbers has already been snapped up. They tried it a couple of seasons ago and all it did was give the bigger teams an advantage over the smaller teams who were not able to fill a complete roster of imports as it was.

If it did go to eleven imports it could be a massive advantage to us.
Most of the teams around us have already recruited alot of players based on splitting an import budget across 10 players - Sheffield and Cardiff spring to mind. If it was to go to 11, it would give us a chance to get a better quality of imports with our budget compared to say sheffeild who possibly have got less of a budget to work with now theyve signed so may players.

Rumours are that due to the departure of a number of quality Brits that the EIHL is raising the import level to 11. Fact or fiction I wonder? Still no outcome of the last EIHL meeting.

Great news, first step in the right direction. Get rid of it all together please.
I want to see the best players possible for my £, youth development is a smoke screen when GB is full of non brits.

youth development is a smoke screen when GB is full of non brits. GB "full of non-Brits"? On what planet? How many non-British players do you see here?:- stats.iihf.com/Hydra/293/IHM2930GBR_33_3_0.pdf Your endless obsession with imports and only imports is ridiculous enough... but you could at least try to base your prejudices on something approaching reality.

Err.... Corey Neilson???, Jeff Hutchins??? Owen Fussey? Pretty sure these are all classed as imports at league level, yet free to take the place of a young Brit on the international stage. This is why i think the rules stink, one rule for one, one for another. I believe if you're good enough, you'll get a shot. If British born brits are good enough for the league, why aren't the good enough for the GB squad??? because GB want to pick the 'best team possible'', which is exactly what i want to see at league level. That for me shows the import limit for what it is, a money saving tool, nothing to do with youth development. it is no coincidence, some brits can earn more money playing in the EPL.

Pretty sure these are all classed as imports at league level, yet free to take the place of a young Brit on the international stage. 3 players - out of 22. And you say GB is "full of non-Brits"? Like I said - on what planet? Some imports can make more money in the EPL (Jan Krajicek did, for one) - some of the EPL clubs absolutely throw money at players. Allegedly. Look - we've been down the route that you keep proposing... no import limit, no restrictions on spending. It was called the ISL. It was good hockey, I'll grant you - it was also doomed. It failed. Worse than failed - it crashed and burned... and it was self-inflicted. And we've had enough stupid/greedy owners in the EIHL (as well as previous leagues) to show that without restrictions, it WILL fail. Neil Black may show self-restraint... but he's the exception to the rule. That's the practical difference between your outlook and mine. The philosphical difference is just as wide... I'm not anti-import by any means, but I am pro-British... not at the expense of sustainable quality, but I want to see more and better British players. And if the clubs can't be trusted to bring British players through off their own bat (and they can't be trusted!) then there needs to be restrictions.

Scrap the import limit and enforce a wage cap.
Said before, will be said again.
It's the ONLY fair way forward.

It's easy for rich owners to 'employ' the players partners and pay them inflated salaries as a way around any cap. There are countless ways to abuse a wage cap and tell me who would police a wage cap here?

Wage caps are difficult to police and won't work. works fine in all US sports. so thats not true... Wage caps are more likely to work in well-regulated sports who show their dealings openly, and where salaries are high enough that an envelope with a few tenners in it won't make any real difference. So that's us stuffed then...

So we've lost 2 brits and everyone is on about upping the import level?
Puh-lease. Farmer could be replaced by several players currently in the EPL (some of whom have already been snapped up, others not) and Thommo should know this better than any. Richardson I can't even remember as a player, but i'm sure there'd be some upstart in the EPL who wouldn't mind a shot at his role in the EIHL, if they got the right pay package.

Too me it's not just the amount of Brits but the quality. There may be enough Brits to go round but will the overall quality drop because teams have to sign unproven Brits. Im not saying there should be 11 imports just that could it be a better option.
