A short history…. The League
Most of the season is dedicated to the lengthy league programme. But the history is chequered since 1898 when Niagara were the first “nominated” English club champions. It appears sides were “seen as” and thus more likely “elected” champions from the culmination of the entire regular period of play. This continued up until the year 1929. Thereafter, clubs sides from England, and a separate Scotland, made up competitive schedules, although this was pitted by faults. 1929-30 had London Lions (Wembley) top of an incomplete league and again denoted the “leading club” side in the year 1931 prior to a full season of play in 31-32. Leagues continued until 1935-36 when Birmingham Maple Leafs transpired a title in our records before a more professional set up was to commence. By 1935-36 the story became a little clearer. National Leagues embarked on a healthy period both north and south of the border and is remembered more for its ice hockey history in what is known as the “Golden Years”. Later our own Nottingham Panthers picking up English trophies in 1951 and 1954. As the two countries then amalgamated to a British League by 1954-55, Panthers had silverware in the cabinet again for 1956. The tale again folds by 1960 as the League becomes defunct. 1966-67 saw a regional “Northern Association” return with both Scottish and North Eastern English teams. This continued until 1982. A more Southerly based section held out a similar League from 1970. This later was joined by another regional division. The newer (1979) Inter-City League (English League South) and Southern Association “Midland League” (English League North) however finished competition by 1982. During this final season a strange situation had an English (and Scottish) National League run alongside these smaller set ups and ice hockey then felt confident enough by the following season to promote a return to British League play, which has existed to the present day. The professional scene highlighting the names Super and Elite in preference to the term British (UK) League.
The Play Offs The culmination to the Season. Both Cup and League have been won but the highlight of the Ice Hockey action seems to have been saved till last. Teams have to qualify (most seasons) by League placing. Presently teams are 'drawn' to quarter final knock out places. These home and away quarter-final ties then bring about the 'Finals weekend' when the semi's and Final are played at one venue. 1929-30 saw the first playoffs which the London Lions engraved into history. Scottish National play then took on board Play-Offs from 1939-40 when the Kirkcaldy Fliers became the first of nine champions of Scotland. England testing the Play-Off water for just one season in 46- 47 as Harringay Greyhounds lifted the Trophy. By the end of this first “golden” era of hockey. Brighton Tigers took the honour of British Play-Off Champions. Play-Off hockey would now disappear until the late 1960’s. Leagues held out Play-Offs from the now regional hockey that Britain played. The Northern Association comprising of the two countries teams held a competition in 1968 through to 1979 whereas all the winners happened to be Scottish. The Southern and Inter-City Association teams in 1976, 77, 78,80,81,82 saw its own title holders. Streatham Redskins being the bookies bet for winners. But, a long established tournament from 1966 called The Icy-Smith Cup (it was played for from 1966- 81) “became” the British Championships and the 1976 winners and subsequent winners to 1981 were denoted as the Championship winners….. i.e. our Play-Offs.
A short history….the Cup. The Ice-Hockey programme is well known for its cup, league then play-off schedule. The Cup a separate entity to the league come play-off schedule.... In 1936-37 Earls Court Rangers were Knock-Out CUP Champions in England.
(some other cups played for in Scotland over the 30's and 40's)
By 1939-40 Dunfermline Vikings picked up the tournament prize denoted as the Scottish Cup.
From 1946-47 both countries played out regular Autumn Cup competitions of their own through to the 1953-54 season. Thereafter the cup campaign took on its British mantle as both associations merged. At this time 1946-47 to 1949-50 a brief National Tournament was held on a similar basis having foreign teams participate in its third season. Likewise a Midlands Cup from 1980-81 to 1982-83 and again in 1989-90 had a short shelf life. Due to constant change in our sports history the 1960’s brought about regional contest. The Northern League had cup winners from 1968 until 1982. The other associations down south, the Inter- City/English South League and the Midland/English North brought forth competition from 1980. From this the Southern Cup combined leagues teams but lasted only two seasons due to the fact that there was a return to a British National schedule with interest to a singular countrywide Autumn Cup once again. This was the format from 1983. But the Autumn Cup ceased in 2000-2001 as two competitions ( Autumn and Challenge) which had overlapped between 1998 and 2001 had the Challenge Cup become the major choice of all. (Who knows why?)
NB) the Icy-Smith Knock-Out Cup played 1966-75 nationally, turned into what is now the British Championship Play-offs. It was also another minor competition of its own once again, played separately years later, Nottingham playing in 1989/90. Other than these domestic affairs Panthers have represented Britain as a team in the Ahearne Cup in 1955, 2002, 2003 and 2006 and in the European Continental Cup by merit in years 1999, 2005 and 2006.

Interesting to look up Manchester Storm on Wikipedia. It says owner Gary Cowan suspended the club on grounds of conscience. Sounds a strange way to finish what was a succesful club.

NB) I believe that the 47 GF tally (on Elite website) for Belfast in the CC A table is incorrect as the game v Dundee was 0-0 and the extra goal was for the league OT (0-1) game. Thus 46 is the true figure. Likewise Dundee should have 23 GA not 24.
Otherwise why give a 'draw' as the result and award 1pt each?
A recent 'Powerplay' issue (stats) seems to agree with me.
ADD...Just received a thanks from Dan Ceman regards the error who will contact the league to get it corrected. The 'Cage Forum' strikes again.
JAN 22nd...Officials have now acknowledged the error...when it will be corrected is another matter.

Played all 67 games DAB Fox Francis Green Lachowicz Wilson Important stats note to remember is that of the 12 CUP games only NINE were 'stand alone' played, as two were also league encounters and one was the semi-final first leg. Therefore 9 Cup + 54 league + 4 PO = 67 which is reflected in the ALL games stats by Elite (though the separate CC stats are based on 12 games)...Phew..
