Taken from Scotsman.com.....Ice Hockey:
How about a day trip to Basingstoke to watch the Bison take on the Nottingham Panthers in the rough and tumble of the British Ice Hockey League? You could catch all the SLAPSTICK ACTION from £10.50 (adults), £7.00 (child conession), £32.00 (family).
Is this how our sport is percieved in the media? I know it`s good to recieve some publicity but isn`t this takin` the p***? Thoughts people.......

Maybe it`s just me,it`s the "slapstick action"that i didn`t like.Hockey is not "slapstick",WWF,old time wrestling(big daddy,etc),"It`s a Knockout"...This is what i would expect to see a label like this be attached to.

More to the point, what the heck is a Bison v Panthers piece doing in the Scotsman anyway? If only they advertised Scottish hockey games as much!

It's the popular perception in the media though isn't it? That our beloved sport is nothing more than an open invitation for thuggery. That isn't the case I know, as does everyone else with half a brain, but those that don't just think it's all fighting. I spoke to a colleague the other day when we were coming back from atrespass interview, and we were talking about football. I'm a Forest fan & he's a Blues fan. I said I prefered hockey and his reply was " That's a poo poo sport! All they ever do is fight!" Only acasual comment I know, but that's what the first impression is of our game

At least it is some form of publicity. East Midlands Today (last night) failed to mention us as we have no home fixture. Though bearing in mind there is no Premier League football this weekend they probably could have found a spare second or two...... wait a minute, no, they were too busy with a comprehensive report on 'professional' paintballing and a 5 minute explanation of the definition of the word 'frog' - I kid you not. You couldn't make it up!! See you all in London

I don't think that anyone's asking for Panthers to be on the news 24/7 Tim, it's just we wont the TV people to acknowledge us more frequently. Both Nottingham football teams+ the Foxes & Rams get mentioned, Leicester Tigers & Notts CCC all get covered regularly, but Panthers don't? Wrong

Wrong However wrong this may seem, I wouldnt jump and down and blame the Beeb and the papers. The blame lies with the media people at the clubs and the league, reporters now a days do not chase stories, but work on press releases from clubs. So if these people are not sending releases then what do the media people report on. The reason the Craighead incident made the papers is a bums on seats thing, the incident was put in a press release and sent to all the papers with the hope of selling more seats for the next game.

So BBC tv's lack of Panthers coverage is due to the club themselves? So I guess by that logic, the Panthers are sending stuff to BBC Radio Nottingham...? Why would they send stuff to one & not the other?

Plus who is really bothered about the hockey, thats the long and short of it Yeah i know what you mean I got called "SAD" by some dodgy bloke on my way to the Guildford game on saturday. I thought "what a W****R i bet hes never even been to an ice hockey game" No need for that though really, i wouldn't go round telling him hes sad for watching his fav sport. Would be nice to see more hockey on t.v and in the papers (even if it is 10 pages from the back page!)

Living in the Meridian TV area (West Sussex and Hampshire mainly) there was some coverage by the BBC last year (a couple of minutes tv slot) of Guildford and Bracknell when they became the BNL playoff finalists. Never heard a word about Basingstoke though and frankly sports like Basketball and field hockey get more coverage down here.
Whilst our clubs should be promoting the sport locally (and local radio in many areas seems a success). I've not seen anything at a national level though.
I bet if I email Radio 5 (supposedly the sports channel) and ask them what their coverage of the Continental Cup is they won't even have heard of it.

I agree that the amount of national coverage hockey gets is disgraceful. Five live's hockey coverage normally extends to having a reporter at the Challenge Cup final and the playoff final, although they did do a 15 minute preview of the inaugural EIHL season last year (including an interview with Rick Brebant). There are far less popular sports that receive much more coverage on there, that is for sure. Shame, as I have no doubt that they would do a very good job of covering it, as they do with most other sports.

Shame, as you say they do very good sports coverage. I guess hockey must have lost out to the fishing section on their website

We do occasionally get the odd snippet on Central/Midlands news like when we won the BNL double or Jodys goal against the Bison last year (Which also made Question Of Sport!!) but the last time we were on was when they allowed cameras into the dressing room between periods of a game in our fall away at the end of last season. Thommo used language that would make Ozzy Osbourne curl up ;D ;D Surprisingly we haven't been on since

I also get really fustrated at the sports which have been given coverage over the EIHL. Hopefully they'll soon get the message
