Hi I posted this on talk off topic but only had one reply and was told to post on here, I am looking to start playing ice hockey I have my body armour but I need to buy a helmet and was wondering on which visor I would need as I dont know if theres any rules to follow as a beginner? I am over 18 so does that mean i can play with just a half visor or do I have to have a full face one? and is there any different rules while playing scrimmage as this is what il be playing while learning? also do the nic run any beginners hockey courses as I looked on the website but it was abit confusing about the ages I couldnt seem to find anything for adults. your help would be appreciated thanks in advance!

Its really down to personal preference, since you're over 18 you are allowed to wear a half visor so that is no problem. A half visor is much much lighter than a full cage and your vision will also be much better, however your teeth are at risk and you only have to look a Bruce Richardson to see what can happen! If you do go for a half visor, I strongly suggest wearing a gumsheild. A full cage will give you the best protection there is, and may help you play with a bit more confidence if you are a beginner, however they are quite heavy (although you wont notice that if you have not experienced anything else) and it can be a bit of a pain having to look through bars. The other, less well known alternative is a clear cages/facemask, such as: www.puckstop.com/acatalog/info_673.html this has the best of both worlds really, good protection and good vision. The only issues with one of these is the price (£65 at puckstop, the NIC may order it in cheaper) and there are occasions when fog could be a problem. Like I say, its your choice, whether you want to sacrifice that extra level of protection with a visor, but potentially play a bit better. Or you want to be safe at least when you start out with a cage or full facemask, however take the price into account before jumping down the facemask route. Hope this helps.

Thank you very much this is very helpfull! As I can use either I think I will try both, half visor for any easy practice etc and full face for scrimmage etc as I don't particularly like the dentist and see how it goes. Only if I can get them cheap enough from eBay or somewhere second hand! I also wondered if any visor will fit on any helmet as you can swap them around or do the attachments vary from different makes? once again thanks for your help!

I think in almost all levels of play now you are required to wear a gumshield if you wear a half visor, in the university league (BUIHA) which play under EIHA rules we often have refs checking guys are wearing them

Most visors can be used on most helmets, can't guarantee this of course but they fit quite simply to a helmet. Might have a bit more of a problem with a cage though, but I wear a Bauer cage on my Reebok helmet so it can be done.
