Mariah Carey, and her 3.5million twitter followers, now knows the name 'Belfast Giants'. It's all about getting the brand out there. Bruins game, and videos like this = marketing genius. I can just here the americans now 'oh! look at the cute Britsh soccer team!' LOL! No, agreed, good promotion. the Giants and Panthers seem to lead the way in promotion, hence they are leading the way in attendances. Mean while the league do nothing in way of promotion.

I can just here the americans now 'oh! look at the cute Britsh soccer team!' LOL! From someone who works in marketing I am not really sure how good the Panthers are at marketing at all really. I think that most of it is preaching to the converted. The Panthers website is dire, no twitter or facebook, no great presence on local news, merchandising is even worse that a local womens institute and I am constantly amazed at how many people in Nottingham don’t even know who the Panthers are. Panthers are very lucky in that they have a very loyal (and aging) fanbase but the marketing isn’t something that I am very aware of. To SGS - I raised the issue of lack of decent coverage of Ice Hockey with East Midlands Today and just got the brush off - they said "it was not a TV Sport"(!) and also they said "they didn't think the average viewer would understand the finer points of Ice Hockey" - how insulting. Whilst I personally find most of the merchandise tacky the Panthers must be doing something right to get an average of 4,500 fans to games. I personally think to we should be doing things like "Kids for a Quid" on some of the games; More advertising in the city centre; more pressure on the local news to show more ice hockey instead of the usual quick brush over it usually gets. We should be using the media more, showing live away games on the website; text updates on team news/games.

Hah, you'd think as hockey players they would have better timing than that!
funny nevertheless.

Various members of the team have been on local tv news, and various radio stations here and US/Canada. ESPN first take is interviewing Jacobson I believe and it was featured on Sky Sports news and Sky news. There has been interest from NBC and NHL.com also.
The website has had thousands of unique hits, the facebook group has doubled the number of followers much the same as twitter. Going by what a fair few tweets / facebook messages are saying jersey orders are being made to have them shipped to US / Canada.
So while it may / may not affect our Christmas attendance it would appear the ripple effect with the brand as well as merchandise sales has started.
I'm astonished at the level of exposure the video has got but it's also a great thing both for us and the EIHL as I'm sure other teams and the league site will probably have a few hits from people wanting to know more about the UK hockey scene.
Coupled with the brawl footage making headlines last week and the video this week, it's all going pretty welll getting the UK hockey brand out there.

Everytime I show it to someone, they find it funny and get a chuckle out of it. The Giants have been a marketing machine this year so it can only mean good things for them long term

I've just seen the full video on Sky Sports news, absolutely brilliant!
Ice hockey is a game full of characters and well done to the Giants for creating some excellent coverage not just for themselves but for the league as a whole.
If this is the sort of thing it takes to get the league noticed on a antional level then it should be encoruaged around the league. Videos of hockey players doing stupid things has endless potential and will create an image of a fun sport that people will want to see.
