Only a few weeks to go before the festival of diving... err I mean football begins.........................................
Any suggestions on the eventual winners or how England will do.
I'm going for Spain to finally shake off the under-performer tag at the World Cup and lift the trophy.
I think England are a solid Qtr-Final team, maybe even the Semi-Finals.

************* WARNING!! SAD ACT MOMENT **************
OK then here goes.
For those of you who go for tournament winner outright betting here are a few things to consider.
1) Only 7 nations have EVER lifted the world cup.
2) 2 of the 7 have only won it once and that was on home soil then that leaves only 5 winners on more than one occasion.
3) No European team has ever won the World cup outside of Europe.
4) Only Brazil (Twice) have been successful away from their own continent.
Based purely on all previous stats then Brazil should be heavy favourites and only Brazil or one of the African nations has a chance............... but of course it is never an exact science.

Spain to win. England to some how struggle to get through the group stages and flop on penalties somewhere along the line.

Spain seem like too big favourites to actually do it, it rarely works that way. I expect a quarter-final berth for England at the least, it's the last chance for players such as Lampard and Gerrard presumably so it'd be nice to imagine that they'd give it a bit extra.
Brazil aren't particularly good of late, they're lacking that extra bit of umph for me. Germany will be Germany. France are crap and Italy are mediocre.
God knows who's going to win.

I would guess between Brazil and Spain to win it.
I think Argentina whilst have one of the strongest squads will not win it due to having Maradona in charge.
Italy i cant see winning it again as they are weaker than the last tournament,Germany will probably get the semi's or the final knowing them lol.
Holland and Portugal will bottle it like usual and France are poor compared to what they were.
England...just arent good enough to win it.

Holland - poor at the back (incl GK) France - suddenly alive with a 4/3/3 (no Henry) Germany - solid but weak in midfield due to injuries. May lack goal Portugal - no form. Ronaldo can't score or assist. Brazil - excellent defence and GK. Plenty of ammo up front too. Argentina - easily has the most talent offensively in the comp. But they lack the same at the back. Brazil and Argentina have swapped places it seems. Spain - we all know how good they are but their draw is a mare. They could get Brazil in the 2nd Rd and Italy in the QF. Italy - without a top notch scorer but they have a nice route to the QF.
We all know England's S&W's.

If the friendlys are anything to go by i dont like our chances come to the knock out stages - We will get that far. But our defence bottle it too often and with james in goal i dont like our chances. Rooney does not look fit and thats our main source of goals. Id say spain or germany for glory

Friendlies mean nothing really. We've got a favourable draw and a decent bet for the semis.

I bet that no matter what happens on our TV screens / computers / radios the same media outlets in North Korea (the democratic republic, of course) will have them lifting the trophy!

Drogba is a huge loss for the Ivory Coast. So much for lucky Sven. The World Cup is poorer for his loss. Especially following on from Essien meaning that two of Africa’s three biggest football stars are now out.
It looks like Rio may be out too. We need a new skipper. And the Prem League needs to introduce a winter break. Sky did research showing that Prem League injuries are at the same rate as Bundesliga injuries until Germany’s winter break. After that we get a much higher rate of injuries.

Might be good news for Daws though. I have mixed feelings about it tbh. Never really rated Rio as a world class defender nor Terry to be honest. Both very very good players but the solid rocks you need... not so sure.

Terry and King now then. Or Terry and Carra. Hardly a speedy combo (I appreciate Rio is not as quick as he was). Maybe we should go with 3 CB's now and play Cole and Johnson as WingBacks. Two big stars gone today. How many others will drop.

Anyone else slightly miffed at the scheduling? South Africa's only an hour ahead of us, but for those of us with a 9-5 job we'll only be able to see 1 game per day, the 7.30 kick off. The other two being 12.30 and 3. Seems a bit weird they've gone with that to me.

Not happy with the 12:30 kick offs, would prefer those games moved to the weekend or extra evening games instead. Probably down to TV companies. The country will come to a hold at 3pm on the 23rd.
Spain will choke it like they do at every world cup, the usual suspects will be there or there abouts. Can't see past Brazil TBH.... But if England get on a role??? lol, our first team is OK but some of the subs are rubbish TBH. Ferdinand is a big loss and hope Barry is 100%.

1.30, 5 and 7.30.
Frankly I think it's tough luck on the rest of the world, we have to put up with it when it's held in South America or the Far East. Just strikes me as a bit odd that when the hosts are so close to our own time zone, we'll only be able to see 1/3 of the games.

I imagine they've thought about this and there's some reason for the time scheduling. I don't think it's too much of an issue though, nobody will miss an England game i think.

England v Slovenia is at 3 on a Wednesday, so unless I take the afternoon off, or they close the office, I'll miss that one.
Ideally I'd watch every game, so yeah I'm somewhat gutted to miss two thirds of them.

i'm with Yotes on this, we invented the damn game. lol i will also miss 2 games every week day, if i asked for a half day, everyday for 2 weeks i'd get laughed at. Can't remember the last time I missed a world cup game? Will book the England game off though or get man flu.

Yeah, it's not two thirds, it's 40% (24 of 60 games), and yeah I'll probably try and book the afternoon off for England, but can't do that for 2 or 3 weeks, as DMan says.
Anyway, was only asking.

Just strikes me as a bit odd that when the hosts are so close to our own time zone, we'll only be able to see 1/3 of the games. You are exactly right. The KO times are a joke. Most people in Europe will miss two of the 3 weekday games because they'll be at work or travelling home from work. Early kick offs make no sense for Europe. It makes no sense for Africa. It makes no sense for North America. It makes no sense for South America. SA has the same timezone as Germany. Germany kicked off at 14:00, 17:00 and 20:00 our time. Much more sensible. At least the KO times will be good for us in 2014. Expect it to be something like - 16:00, 20:00 and 23:00.
