No sympathy for people who kill themselves, a highly selfish thing to do in my humble opinion. His wife must be really hurting now, especially after losing the kid too.

Having been to many suicides on the railway, I have sympathy to the police officers that had to deal with it.
A very messy way to go.

Having never suffered from depression, I don't know how it affects one’s psyche. A 32 year old reaching the stage where, in his mind, death is preferable to life - despite all the apparent positives in that life and despite knowing what it’d mean to those that survive him - is to me deserving of sympathy.

Doing it in a way that will severely screw up his wife, child, the train driver and the police though? The train driver may never drive again.

Regardless of whether you have respect for people who kill theirselves or not, how about showing some respect to his family regardless of whether they'll see this or not. RIP

I think you're over simplifying the matter and being very insensitive whilst doing so. Generally speaking people who commit suicide aren't usually thinking straight about anything or anyone. Granted they probably don't think about how it might affect other people and yes in a way that is selfish, but that doesn't mean they deserve no sympathy or to be disrespected.

I guess he just wasn't in a mental state that those considerations outweighed his desire to die, or even weighed on the decision at all. If it was a callous act of a clear thinking mind, I'd agree with you I think, but to me this guy was ill, and for that and where it's led him to, he gets my sympathy.

More to come no doubt - New Year is suicide hot spot. I don't think anyone who has worked in emergency services and dealt with people killing themselves/threatening to kill themselves can be classed as being totally callous if they're not overly sympathetic with the person that chose to inflict their suicide and the ensuing fall out on others though. I'm sure we all have massive sympathy for those left behind and having to deal with it though.
